As technologies and remote work make research more diffuse, research buildings have an important role to play in enhancing relationship building, collaboration and sense of community. In our survey of over 1,000 scientists in partnership with The New York Academy of Sciences, 82% of respondents said proximity to colleagues is paramount, while 66% said being near outside scientists is important, too. Amenities, social areas and outdoor spaces can become key differentiators that attract talent by allowing scientists to connect both inside and outside the lab. Rooftop gardens, walking paths, nature preserves, and outdoor spaces can also enhance productivity and provide informal ways to connect. To create one central hub, BlackRock’s new headquarters in Manhattan brings its 4,000 NY-based employees under one roof for the first time through an uplifting design. Inspired by the city’s street grids, communal spaces such as a 15-story glass-enclosed stair rises through the building to encourage planned or chance encounters, while a 400-seat auditorium creates a central zone for major events. In addition, vibrant pops of color woven throughout—blue for alertness, green for focus and orange for activation, enliven the workspace. “It was a big milestone, and [BlackRock] wanted to ensure that this new environment reinforced the idea of ‘one BlackRock,’” says NBBJ’s John Gunn, AIA, LEED AP. 800,000 trees and counting! 🌲
Giving back is a hallmark of NBBJ culture. This year, we continue our commitment to plant one million trees by 2030, with 800,000 planted so far! Throughout this effort, we’ve restored more than five thousand acres of American forest, with additional restoration in other parts of the world. This achievement is the outcome of our long-term commitment as a firm to sustainably—and literally—grow our legacy. Understanding what scientists want most in a workplace is central to designing better research buildings. To illuminate this topic, we partnered with the The New York Academy of Sciences to poll 1,059 scientists from the organization’s global community about what they would prioritize most in the lab environment of the future. We started by asking scientists what they would prioritize most in the lab environment of the future. We found that scientists value collaborative space most, even above physical comfort or individual work areas. When asked about which types of amenities they prefer, those that simplify their lives, such as food and drink, transit options and green space topped the charts, followed by wellness-focused amenities like gyms and pharmacies.
