Construction has officially commenced on Staffordshire University Student Village! Last week, Fira appreciated the opportunity to celebrate with the team at the groundbreaking ceremony. The landscape masterplan has been developed to combine student living with nature. The proposed residences will be set into a wooded hillside with a new boardwalk and footbridge connecting the Village to a future Campus Parkland. A range of external amenity spaces will meet the needs of students by providing areas for relaxation, socialising, study, and exercise. The masterplan responds to the proximity of the River Trent corridor and Trentside Nature Reserve by extending the green infrastructure into the Village. The landscape has been developed to optimise biodiversity, which will in turn enable the students to connect with nature. The scheme will be delivered in partnership with Staffordshire Campus Living, a consortium formed by HOCHTIEF PPP Solutions (UK) & (Irl) Ltd, Pinnacle Group Limited, Plenary Group and Staffordshire University. Willmott Dixon have been appointed to lead the construction of the new Student Village. It has taken a lot of hard work from the design team to get the project to this point, so congratulations to the architects Corstorphine & Wright and engineering team at Ramboll amongst many others. #LandscapeArchitecture #StudentLiving #HigherEducation #StudentVillage #Biodiversity #Sustainability

Fira is thrilled to announce the promotion of David Williams to Associate. David is a highly respected member of our team with ten years of experience. As an incredibly talented Landscape Architect, David works as a project lead, taking developments from the visioning stage, through planning, and onto overseeing delivery on site. Since joining Fira in 2017 as a Graduate, David has worked on many of our landmark projects, with clients including the University of Oxford, the National Memorial Arboretum, and the Royal British Legion. Beyond his project work, David is a passionate advocate for the landscape profession. He oversees mentoring and tuition support for staff on the Landscape Institute Pathway to Chartership, as well as assisting the Institute with Chartership examinations. Fira is proud to be supporting David's career growth and look forward to seeing his continuing successes on our strategic residential, public realm, life sciences, and healthcare projects. #landscapearchitecture #promotion #fira

The Fira team recently took a few (well earned) days out of the office for a trip to Manchester. Of course we enjoyed our time exploring Manchester’s pioneering public realm, and naturally we identified every tree in the marvellous #MayfieldPark before shooting off for a good old stroll round #RHSGardenBridgewater. Most of all, we appreciated taking time out to enjoy each other’s company. And ice cream, lots and lots of ice cream. #Fira #summertrip #Manchester #publicrealm #landscapearchitecture

Since 2015, Fira has helped lead the way integrating Building Information Modelling (BIM) into the landscape architecture profession. A milestone of this journey was marked at the Landscape Institute ‘Digital Practice & Technology for Landscape conference’, where Fira was represented by our Digital Lead Gareth Lapworth. BIM has revolutionised how Fira works and is a now a fundamental pillar of our practice, helping to take projects from concept to completion. From early design reviews, to visualising a scheme, to coordination with other disciplines, and right through to long-term management; BIM is helping to drive Fira’s evolution as we respond to global challenges such as flood alleviation, urban cooling, and reducing carbon emissions. Feel free to scan to QR code below to take a look at ‘BIM in action’ on the Life and Mind project, which is currently under construction for the University of Oxford. Finally, a word from our Digital Lead Gareth on the conference and the role of BIM. “I was privileged enough to be asked to be a panellist on a discussion group at the Digital practice and technology conference. It was great to have a general discussion with Giuliana Santos and Alejandro Masferrer Gatica on the digital impact on landscape practice, and to take questions from the audience to help other people on their digital journey. Overall, it was a great day see people face to face, exchanging experiences and attending a variety of digital seminars. It really looks promising where we all are heading in the future with ever developing digital technology.” #Fira #Tech4Landscape #BIM #landscapearchitecture #design

Absolute pleasure to have Abby Staniland from Landscape Architecture at Birmingham recently visit Fira for two week’s work experience. I am feeling very grateful and inspired after spending an amazing two weeks at Fira Landscape Ltd. It has been incredibly valuable working within the office and seeing creative minds work together and learn about some really meaningful projects in the works. Not only this, being able to use several new pieces of software has been a fun challenge but very rewarding, especially with great help from all the team and Gareth Lapworth. I felt very inspired during my time, making me (even more) passionate about landscape, and appreciate all the hard work that goes into it. Thank you all for being so welcoming, friendly and for an amazing opportunity Jeremy Parker. I look forward to seeing everyone soon!
