Restorative outdoor paths winding through majestic hills. The gentle sound of native grasses rustling in the wind. The calming scent of rosemary and thyme. Daylight-filled, floor-to-ceiling windows and gentle curves. Patios floating above a sweeping landscape. These (and many more) features are being recognized by TIME, which today, names the Montage Health Ohana Center for Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health to its Best Inventions of 2024 list in the design category! The project unites neurosciences insights, such as access to nature for patient wellness and respite spaces for caregivers to recharge, to create a new model of behavioral health while decreasing stress and staff turnover. To compile this year's list, TIME solicited nominations from TIME editors and correspondents around the world, and through an online application process, paying special attention to growing fields—such as healthcare, AI, and green energy. TIME then evaluated each contender on a number of key factors, including originality, efficacy, ambition and impact. We’re so proud of Ohana! Congratulations to the entire team and all of TIME’s winners! ✨ https://lnkd.in/gZmYT2kp Fast + Epp I Whitson Engineers I South Bay Construction I BFS Landscape Architects I Susan Krane I Antonio Acoustics I NG Associates I Jensen Hughes I Introba #awards #design #healthcare #wellness #TIMEBestInventions #nbbjdesign

Cities along the equator are growing rapidly. But their hot, humid and rainy climates present a challenge for designers. How can we deliver high-quality, mixed-use projects in tropical areas that prioritize performance of both people and buildings in a climate-changing world? The design of the Keppel South Central project in Singapore—which was awarded the region’s highest sustainability Green Mark Platinum status—creates a microclimate underneath an exterior canopy structure that protects the public open space while allowing people to spend longer periods outside. An exterior environmental veil shrouds the office building, blocking direct sun while reflecting ambient daylight into the interior. In addition, rooftop-mounted photovoltaics generate energy to power lighting and exterior air fans in the outdoor public spaces, and rainwater harvested from the veil surfaces is recycled for landscape irrigation. https://lnkd.in/g_HDi8Kr #commercial #architecture #sustainability #sustainabledesign #nbbjdesign

The Atrium Health David Conlan Center at Carolinas Regional Hospital receives a Lean Construction Institute (US) 2024 Design Award honorable mention! The awards recognize projects that feature outstanding design while advancing the industry through collaborative Lean project delivery. The awards were presented during a ceremony on October 24 in San Diego, CA. Addressing the need for dedicated rehabilitation facilities due to the fast-growing nature of the subspecialty, the project actively supports each patient’s rehab, both physically and emotionally. The design uses prefabricated patient rooms and components with more than 60% of construction labor occurring offsite and incorporates Universal Design principles that enable accessibility and maneuverability. Unique rehab specific features such as forward approach, height-adjustable desks, distance markers for walking tests, and motivating graphics and purposeful artwork from diverse, disabled and local artists empower patients along their healing journey. https://lnkd.in/gsAYqC-x

As technologies and remote work make research more diffuse, research buildings have an important role to play in enhancing relationship building, collaboration and sense of community. In our survey of over 1,000 scientists in partnership with The New York Academy of Sciences, 82% of respondents said proximity to colleagues is paramount, while 66% said being near outside scientists is important, too. Amenities, social areas and outdoor spaces can become key differentiators that attract talent by allowing scientists to connect both inside and outside the lab. Rooftop gardens, walking paths, nature preserves, and outdoor spaces can also enhance productivity and provide informal ways to connect. To create one central hub, BlackRock’s new headquarters in Manhattan brings its 4,000 NY-based employees under one roof for the first time through an uplifting design. Inspired by the city’s street grids, communal spaces such as a 15-story glass-enclosed stair rises through the building to encourage planned or chance encounters, while a 400-seat auditorium creates a central zone for major events. In addition, vibrant pops of color woven throughout—blue for alertness, green for focus and orange for activation, enliven the workspace. “It was a big milestone, and [BlackRock] wanted to ensure that this new environment reinforced the idea of ‘one BlackRock,’” says NBBJ’s John Gunn, AIA, LEED AP.
