#DYK Honeybees are essential to a third of the world’s food production? 🐝 Unfortunately, in recent years, honey bees have been dying off because of poor nutrition due to land-use changes, pesticide exposure and introduced pests and diseases. Researchers at North Carolina State University- College of Veterinary Medicine and North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences are exploring new methodologies for anesthetizing bees. These new methods not only can reduce honey bee stress, but also improve the safety of researchers. Learn more about these advancements in honeybee medicine and the #OneHealth implications below 👇
HONEYBEE ANESTHESIA. Yes, you read that correctly! In a collaborative research project between #NCStateVetMed and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, experts in anesthesia, insects and bee-keeping came together this week to test novel (and less stressful) ways of anesthetizing bees - a huge leap for honeybee medicine and #OneHealth. Presented my work today at the 2024 North Carolina Global Health Alliance conference at the McKimmon Center at NC State alongside my group mate Caitlin Niven who presented her's. Both of our first research topics are based on the same parent study! As North Carolina keeps recovering from the devastating aftermath of hurricane Helene, it was inspiring to see public health leaders taking lessons from global scenarios and applying them locally. #globalwash #WASH #NC
