About us
What is Materials Science and Engineering? Our world is driven by the materials that are currently available. Millions of everyday consumer products, machines, and innovative technologies are made better because of new and improved materials. The automobile industry has lighter, fuel-efficient car bodies. Cell phone and tablet manufacturers take advantage of ultra-thin, damage-resistant glass for displays. Biomedical device companies are using biologically compatible materials to repair and replace parts of the human body. In fact, many of today’s industrial problems await materials solutions: electrical engineers ask for better semiconductors, and computer technology demands materials that store more and more information. The North Carolina State University Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is well-known as a friendly department providing unique and high-impact opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students.

Proud to be a woman in engineering! Happy International Day of Women and Girls in STEM to all of my fellow engineers and scientists. Later this month, I’m looking forward to give back to this community by participating in SWE Fest, where engineering departments from NC State, Duke, UNC, and ECU will come together to inspire the next generation of female-identifying high school students. The NC State Materials Science and Engineering department will be there, highlighting the incredible opportunities our field has to offer!
Today marks 10 years since the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed February 11th as International Day of Women and Girls in Science. As a champion of women engineers for 75 years, SWE shares and celebrates the UN's goal of promoting full and equal access to and participation in STEM for women and girls! #IDWGS #WomenInScience #GirlsInScience

Before I read Véronique Balland's excellent work on PCET with metal oxides, I thought aqueous acidic electrolytes were more or less alike (materials-centric thinking 🙃 ) Luckily for me, we met in person at the 2023 PCET meeting in Spain, and our shared interest resulted in a Review (with Noah Holzapfel), which is now available: Fundamentals of Proton-Insertion Coupled Electron Transfer (PICET) in Metal Oxides for Aqueous Batteries https://lnkd.in/g_4rf99s
