The Coalition for a proposed New England – Maritimes Offshore Energy Corridor (NEMOEC) is proud to be accepting new members! Today we have officially launched ‘Phase 2’ of our work to support the development of a shared offshore backbone #transmission corridor that directly connects US and Canadian #offshorewind resources. Our vision for transformative #interregional electricity infrastructure is to build a cleaner and more resilient regional grid while minimizing #stakeholder impacts and helping both regions meet their #renewableenergy needs. Phase 2 will take a deep dive into analyzing the economic growth potential resulting from this shared backbone approach. A new white paper will explore the economic impact of the Corridor, seeking to quantify the expected increase in offshore wind deployment and the associated economic benefits. As we continue to grow the tent, we are especially keen to bring in members of the offshore wind #supplychain, who will benefit from building a more robust and sustainable regional marketplace. New members of the #NEMOEC Coalition have the opportunity to build relationships with key stakeholders in the region through our collaborative efforts, shape the the debate around how the New England and Maritimes clean energy economy unfolds, and gain priority participation in webinars, workshops, and media opportunities as we promote the findings of the new whitepaper. We've said it before and we'll say it again: Nova Scotia's offshore wind resource is an essential part of the clean energy future for the entire Can-Am Northeast. Very encouraging to see the province continue to move forward in a strategic way.

Melanie Nadeau, P.Eng. ICD.D.'s piece in SaltWire this week takes the #NEMOEC concept and amplifies it, outlining the possibilities for an Atlantic Northeast Innovation Corridor. She points out the many shared assets and opportunities that could be better leveraged across the Atlantic Northeast, including: ⚓ A strong maritime workforce and shipping industry 🌊 A thriving blue economy research sector ⚡ Abundant ocean energy knowledge base 🔬 World-class research institutions and technology innovators She even points to our work as an example that is helping set the stage for cross-border collaboration: "The concept of the proposed New England – Maritimes Offshore Energy Corridor (NEMOEC) is an example of cross-border collaboration that could environmentally and economically benefit residents throughout the Atlantic Northeast." The 475-mile Viking Link subsea interconnector between the UK and Denmark is officially operational! This project served as inspiration for the #NEMOEC proposal to deliver #offshorewind resources from US and Canadian waters to load centers in both countries. A very welcome proof point that we really are capable of doing big things 💪

Did you know?  A New England – Maritimes Offshore Energy Corridor (NEMOEC) 1) Could deliver up to $780m per year in system and greenhouse gas reduction; 2) improves the outlook for offshore wind markets in US and Canada; 3) is scalable, enabling both regions to meet their climate goals; and 4) promotes a standardized approach using HVDC designs to maximizes the corridor's value. Excellent report from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Department of the Interior looking at what it will mean to act on transmission. The agencies rightfully say it will take a coordinated effort to bring the East Coast’s offshore wind resources on land and serving local communities.  We agree- and we believe working together across the Canadian/American border, we can build an even more reliable and sustainable grid! Congratulations to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on this incredible milestone investment in #gridplanning and #gridreliability! We were particularly pleased to see projects that shared many of the same elements we envision working in the New England-Maritimes regions: [ X ] Exploring ways to increase the delivery of renewable energy across state borders and linking their overall proposal to lower consumer costs, as in Increasing Transmission Capacity to Expand Renewable Energy Integration’s approach; [ X ] Using a two-way power flow model, as seen in The Grid of the Future’s proposal; [ X ] Engaging with stakeholders and working across multiple states like the Cooperative Energy Ecosystem model. All of these samples explore how their proposals can benefit disadvantaged or local communities in which they operate.
