🌱 NESsT at COP16: Unlocking Finance for a Locally-Led Pan-Amazon Bioeconomy 🌍 Last week at COP16 Colombia, the world’s largest biodiversity forum held in Cali, Colombia, #NESsT brought together representatives from bioeconomy enterprises, development banks, and public and private investors to explore ways to mobilize direct financing for Indigenous-led enterprises in the Amazon. We listened closely to the challenges and experiences of local entrepreneurs and together discussed opportunities and solutions to ensure Indigenous Peoples and local communities have the financial resources they need to drive enterprises that protect biodiversity and provide dignified livelihoods. By bridging communication and knowledge gaps, we’re moving closer to a sustainable and inclusive Amazon bioeconomy led by grassroots organizations. ✨A heartfelt thank you to our partners for co-organizing this event, to panelists, and moderators / Un agradecimiento especial a nuestros aliados por co-organizar este evento, a los panelistas y moderadores: Pan-Amazon Network for Bioeconomy, Amazon Investor Coalition, Conservation International, Wri Brasil (World Resources Institute), Ricardo Andrés Calderón Solarte (AGROSOLIDARIA FLORENCIA), Daniel Hincapie (IDB), Bruna Mesquita (Michelin), Karin Metell Cueva (SIDA), Joana Oliveira de Oliveira (Pan Amazon Network for Bioeconomy), José Yahuarcani, (Asociación Intercomunitaria Painu), CAIRO BASTOS (NESsT), Yanê Amoras Lima (Amazon Investor Coalition). Jorge Júnior, founder of NESsT portfolio enterprise Trampay, is a finalist for the Folha de S.Paulo Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award! ✨ The award recognizes Brazilian entrepreneurs driving inspiring and innovative solutions with positive impact on people and the planet. Jorge Júnior founded fintech and social enterprise Trampay to create a fairer, safer gig economy for workers. Trampay provides low-interest loans to gig workers, among other services, giving them access to upfront cash that allows them to cover essential living expenses for themselves and their families such as food, rent, and healthcare. Trampay also operates a rest stop in an area with high delivery demand, providing a space for drivers to warm up meals, socialize, and rest after extended shifts. As part of its award submission, Trampay is raising funds to establish a new support center where delivery workers can rest, eat, and recharge. In the demanding environment of daily deliveries, this center aims to enhance the working conditions and support the health of those who keep the city moving. ⏰ Folha de S.Paulo will announce the winners of the award on November 8th! 🌱 The bioeconomy is vital for a sustainable future. In tropical countries rich in biodiversity, non-timber forest products—such as fruits, seeds, and resins—offer a pathway to sustainable economic development. However, integrating these resources into the bioeconomy requires addressing challenges related to logistics, technology, policy and sustainability. Join us at the #COP16 Green Zone, where we will explore how these products can drive sustainable development and strengthen local economies. This UN Biodiversity event, organized in collaboration with Focali - Forests, Climate & Livelihoods, FAO, Parques Nacionales Naturales de Colombia , BIOINTROPIC, Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura (IICA), Red Latinoaméricana de Bioecnomía, and Corporación Biotec, will focus on the key goals of the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. "Housing has improved, meals have become more nutritious, and local families are enjoying a better quality of life. [...] COOPAFLORA is much more than a cooperative; it is a driving force that empowers us and fills us with hope for a sustainable, prosperous future." 💫 🌱 Dayana Silva, president of NESsT portfolio enterprise COOPAFLORA, shares how the bioeconomy cooperative is improving the lives of a network of Indigenous suppliers in the Brazilian Amazon through the sustainable collection of forest products harvested without cutting down trees in a recent article by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC). The article also explores NESsT’s key role in supporting enterprises like COOPAFLORA to expand and thrive through business planning and financial support while continuing to honor traditional livelihoods: 💬 CAIRO BASTOS, NESsT Amazonia Program Manager, shares: “Ancestral forest management practices are like a treasure trove with which traditional Amazon communities can demonstrate to the broader society that inclusive development — in harmony with nature and valuing the work of women — is viable.” 👉 We invite you to read more here: https://lnkd.in/dZEd8FtZ ------ IDRC supports regenerative agribusinesses and investment in the Amazon and Central America Dry Corridor with the Negocios Agroalimentarios Regenerativos (NAR) consortium consisting of 10 organizations, including NESsT. In the Brazilian Amazon, wildfires and illegal logging threaten the forest and the livelihoods of traditional communities. Regenerative agribusinesses like the Indigenous-led #cooperative, COOPAFLORA, are changing that. “Housing has improved, meals are more nutritious, and local families enjoy an enhanced quality of life,” says Daiana Figueiredo da Silva, President, COOPAFLORA. Learn more about how this agribusiness is increasing #FoodSecurity for local Indigenous, quilombola (Afro-Brazilian) and riverine families. https://bit.ly/3BQqTCa #SowingTheFuture #Health #Sustainability
