🇵🇪 Meet the latest addition to the NESsT Lirio Fund – Apromayo! 🫘 Apromayo sources coffee beans from small-scale producers in remote rainforest areas of the San Martín and Amazonas regions in Peru. Women-led with support from a young team, Apromayo has become a key player in the region’s coffee industry. Since its inception almost a decade ago, it has grown from six members to over 300. "Textile waste is a significant problem [in Chile]. It’s estimated that 39,000 tons a year end up in landfills in the Chilean desert,” shares Rosario Hevia, CEO of Ecocitex – a NESsT portfolio enterprise with the mission to eliminate textile waste, above all that generated by the fast fashion industry.     Founded and led by entrepreneur Rosario Hevia, Ecocitex recycles 69 tons of used, donated clothes every year. The Santiago-based enterprise also operates a clothing donation program tailored for communities in need. They have collected over 1.2 tons of clothing since 2022, which has positively impacted the lives of 220 individuals annually.    Three years ago, Ecocitex opened a production facility in Santiago, Chile to recycle used and donated clothing, while offering dignified employment and training opportunities to formerly incarcerated women, ensuring access to technical roles that have been historically reserved for men.    In June 2023, Ecocitex lost its textile factory to a fire, which destroyed its fabric recycling machines and stock of upcycled products. With support from NESsT, Ecocitex quickly transitioned to a new business model while staying true to its circular economy ethos    Today, Ecocitex partners with local retailers to sell upcycled and pre-owned products and to collect used clothing. Its repurposed products feature components crafted or upcycled by local sewing professionals who work in small or family-run workshops. Ecocitex supports these individuals – over 80% of whom are women and 35% from excluded groups – to grow their craft, enhance their skillsets, and improve their economic stability. With NESsT’s support, Ecocitex aims to train more workers and strengthen local communities at each of its points of sale.    “In the fire, we lost everything—our facilities, machinery, inventory, and stores. But we rose again. Being prepared for both the best and worst scenarios and having a solid contingency plan in place is crucial. It’s equally important not to lose sight of your purpose and passion, as they will fuel your determination during crises. 🌱 NESsT at COP16: Unlocking Finance for a Locally-Led Pan-Amazon Bioeconomy 🌍 Last week at COP16 Colombia, the world’s largest biodiversity forum held in Cali, Colombia, #NESsT brought together representatives from bioeconomy enterprises, development banks, and public and private investors to explore ways to mobilize direct financing for Indigenous-led enterprises in the Amazon. We listened closely to the challenges and experiences of local entrepreneurs and together discussed opportunities and solutions to ensure Indigenous Peoples and local communities have the financial resources they need to drive enterprises that protect biodiversity and provide dignified livelihoods. Jorge Júnior, founder of NESsT portfolio enterprise Trampay, is a finalist for the Folha de S.Paulo Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award! ✨ The award recognizes Brazilian entrepreneurs driving inspiring and innovative solutions with positive impact on people and the planet. Jorge Júnior founded fintech and social enterprise Trampay to create a fairer, safer gig economy for workers. Trampay provides low-interest loans to gig workers, among other services, giving them access to upfront cash that allows them to cover essential living expenses for themselves and their families such as food, rent, and healthcare.     Trampay also operates a rest stop in an area with high delivery demand, providing a space for drivers to warm up meals, socialize, and rest after extended shifts. As part of its award submission, Trampay is raising funds to establish a new support center where delivery workers can rest, eat, and recharge. Recently, the NESsT CEE Team had the chance to visit Heca – a social cooperative (Spółdzielnia Socjalna "Heca") and NESsT portfolio enterprise based in Tczew, in northern Poland.    What makes Heca so unique? The social enterprise operates as an umbrella brand with ventures in diverse sectors like:  🚲 A bicycle workshop  ☕ A coffee shop  🍦 Artisanal ice cream & lemonade production  🌿 Circular furniture design  🧸 Nursery care By operating in diverse sectors, Heca is able to respond to local needs in the community while creating new job opportunities. This approach supports individuals who face difficulties securing employment, such as people with physical or mental disabilities, or those experiencing homelessness, migration, or displacement.     Through its diverse activities, Heca provides around 50 people with training and employment opportunities, supporting them to access meaningful work with strong career paths and integrate into the workplace. During the visit, Maksymilian Flemming, President of Heca shared: 💬 "As founders, we divide responsibilities to ensure focused leadership across our diverse business lines while fostering an environment where employees can grow into leadership roles.
