This week on The Business of Open Source I talked with Galeal Zino, CEO and founder of NetFoundry, about how there can be business benefits to having an open source project from the beginning, even if you aren't focusing much attention on promoting the OSS and aren't using the project to generate leads. We also talked about missions. If you aim to completely dominate a specific market and change the standard for how a particular technology is used, you need to be doing open source. And that is Galeal's goal for OpenZiti. Then there's the flywheel effect you can get from community contributions and just seeing how the project is used by the community. But it's hard... A welder can't carve circuits into a silicon chip with tools like this. Precision tools from companies like ASML can carve chips, because they work at a nanometer scale. The right tool for the job. We see the same thing in inter-company networking. Every S2S VPN, B2B VPN or extranet is a welder trying to use a blowtorch to do silicon chip lithography! Great news for AWS S3 users who were forced to use VPN or Direct Connect to upload to private S3. Now you get private S3 without the horrors of VPN/DC. The Python solution described below is available for anything (Python is just one super cool example). As a quick compare: New solution for private S3: With NetFoundry, your interface endpoints in your VPC are directly accessible from your applications, from any Internet connection, with a much more secure and simple model than VPN/DC. Old model for private S3: "With AWS PrivateLink for Amazon S3, you can provision interface VPC endpoints (interface endpoints) in your virtual private cloud (VPC). These endpoints are directly accessible from applications that are on premises over VPN and AWS Direct Connect, or in a different AWS Region over VPC peering."* * quoted from AWS website
