About us
New Detroit is a coalition of 57 nonprofit, corporate, and civic leaders working to achieve racial understanding and racial equity in Metropolitan Detroit. We were formed in response to civil unrest in 1967 at the request of then Michigan Governor George Romney, Detroit Mayor Jerome Cavanagh, and business executive Joseph L. Hudson, Jr. to identify what went wrong, what needed to change, and how to make that change happen. New Detroit’s work is organized around three pillars: thought leadership, policy advocacy, and collective action.

Because New Detroit calls out and corrects the inequities deeply embedded in the fabric of our nation, we thank the Michigan Department of Civil Rights for yet another impactful conference. We share here an excerpt of Executive Director John E. Johnson, Jr., J.D.’s opening remarks on the persistence of discrimination. His comments are on housing discrimination but the same can be said regarding education, law enforcement, health care, and virtually every other system in our country. “Despite the passage of the Fair Housing Act nearly sixty years ago, housing discrimination has not been abated. It may not be as overt and readily observable as it was 60 years ago, but it’s modern-day ramifications may be tougher to fight specifically because it is not. As some in this work have learned, housing discrimination is often disguised behind a smile and a handshake. *** “We know the problem is widespread and that it affects nearly every class of individuals protected by the civil rights laws we enforce -- race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, familial status, marital status, and disability.” Image description: Gov. Whitmer standing with Executive Director John E. Johnson, Jr, and Chair Gloria Lara at the conference.

This is an example of what racial justice in action looks like for 1 family. The history of land dispossession among Black Americans is a complex and painful subject, deeply intertwined with the legacy of racism and discrimination. The ongoing struggle for racial equality continues to raise significant issues, reflecting the need for knowing the history of discriminatory practices by both private individuals and government entities, and exploring ways to rectify past and present injustices.

@Johns Hopkins’ evaluation of New Detroit’s Just Care® training has been published in the academic journal, "Health Affairs Scholar!” The evaluation recognizes that, “Racial bias by US health care providers is a contributor to racial inequity in health and treatment outcomes” and concludes that “given the satisfaction of participants and responses indicating its usefulness, our results suggest that New Detroit's Just Care training should be considered for expansion and additional evaluation.” @Henry Ford Health is conducting the additional evaluation…stay tuned! Thank you @Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan for contracting with us to develop the curriculum, helping recruit physicians to participate, connecting Johns Hopkins to evaluate its impact, and a second contract to expand the program; @Vital Strategies for funding the initial contract; @Marshalle Favors @Amanda Reed @Sarah Lawson for designing the curriculum. https://lnkd.in/gAYNhD9F.
