It’s no great secret that voting rights have been under attack in this country. Since SCOTUS’s decision in Shelby County v. Holder in 2013, the federal Voting Rights Act—once a bastion of civil rights—has been significantly weakened. Since Shelby County, there’s been a barrage of new restrictive voting laws and anti-Democratic policies. These restrictive laws hurt all voters, but voters of color most of all. Instead of bolstering the VRA and protecting the right to vote, Congress continues to do nothing. And in the meantime, the VRA continues to weather mean-spirited (and frankly racist) legal challenge after legal challenge. Well, if Congress won’t do anything to protect voters, states will just have to do it instead.
