It’s no great secret that voting rights have been under attack in this country. Since SCOTUS’s decision in Shelby County v. Holder in 2013, the federal Voting Rights Act—once a bastion of civil rights—has been significantly weakened. Since Shelby County, there’s been a barrage of new restrictive voting laws and anti-Democratic policies. These restrictive laws hurt all voters, but voters of color most of all. Instead of bolstering the VRA and protecting the right to vote, Congress continues to do nothing. And in the meantime, the VRA continues to weather mean-spirited (and frankly racist) legal challenge after legal challenge. Well, if Congress won’t do anything to protect voters, states will just have to do it instead. Early voting for one of the most consequential elections of our lifetime started Saturday, October 26th through Sunday, November 3rd! 135,075 New Jerseyans voted on the first day of early voting alone—with eight more days of early voting to go! The collective advocacy of the League of Women Voters of New Jersey, New Jersey Institute for Social Justice and partners led New Jersey to pass legislation creating 9 days of early voting—the same day Georgia made it illegal to give voters in line water! This afternoon, Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way signed into law A2280/S1311, legislation to combat racial discrimination in home appraisals and require real estate appraisers to complete anti-bias training. We’ve heard the stories before. A Black homeowner gets a home appraised and, suspecting it’s been undervalued, has a white person stand in for another appraisal – only to get a higher valuation. In fact, during a hearing for this legislation, Tomeka Thompson, a Black woman, testified that she was present when her home was appraised for $475,000. After removing all family pictures and being absent from the second appraisal, her home’s value increased to $515,000. “This is why I wholeheartedly support this legislation,” she concluded. Because homeownership is a direct driver of wealth, discriminatory appraisals fuel New Jersey’s staggering $300,000 racial wealth gap. In combination with an Attorney General directive also aimed at combatting appraisal discrimination, this new law will bring us closer to a more equitable New Jersey, and will be felt in a real, concrete way.
