About us
We help lawyers. Life is full of triumphs and trials, big moments and small, and the occasional bump in the road that can feel almost insurmountable. Sometimes, all that is needed is a conversation, a little guidance and support. Sometimes, more. NJLAP will help define the challenge, recommend resources and provide encouragement along your journey back to your best self and your best life. Stress, alcohol/drugs, anxiety, career concerns, gambling, depression — whatever the problem, you need not face it alone. It’s confidential and free to ANY New Jersey attorney. It’s time to make that call. 800-246-5527

Nothing like a cup of tea to warm a cool day, soothe a tired mind, and connect with others. NJLAP's Dr. Defne Ekin sharing tea and well-being with Seton Hall Law Students.
On a crisp, cool day like this, nothing pairs better with reflection and connection than a warm cup of tea. ☕️ Sometimes, it’s the simplest rituals that ground us. Today at Seton Hall University School of Law’s Well-Being event, I appreciated sharing a mindfulness moment with future legal leaders. We used the warmth of tea as a tool for reflection and connection—because even in the busiest moments, taking time to center ourselves can make all the difference. Always great to spread the word about the free and confidential support available through the New Jersey Lawyers Assistance Program

More research equals better tools for protecting lawyer well-being
Prevention and confidential support are at the heart of what do at New Jersey Lawyers Assistance Program, but these efforts must be grounded in research to be truly effective. I highly encourage practicing lawyers at private law firms to complete this anonymous survey, as it add to our understanding of the risk factors impacting lawyer well-being and help shape a better future for all in the legal field. Thank you Patrick R. Krill and collaborators for the ongoing research.

We marked the World Mental Health Day by offering a lunch pop-up Rutgers Law School Newark. Our team clinician,Defne Ekin and holistic health counselor, Josie M Coyoc used the Feelings Wheel to explore the many dimensions of fear and how it triggers the brain’s fight-or-flight response. We then demonstrated quick, effective ways students can calm their nervous system using aromatherapy and other tools. Students created their own essential oil blends for better sleep, focus, or easing anxiety and left with goodie bags packed with grounding tools like gratitude journals, calming teas, and mindfulness tips. Helping future lawyers build resilience and manage stress!

New Jersey Lawyers Assistance Program reposted this
Today, on World Mental Health Day, we focus on the crucial theme of Mental Health at Work. In the legal profession, mental health challenges are particularly prevalent. Did you know: 28% of lawyers experience mild or higher levels of depression. 21% of lawyers report symptoms of anxiety. Lawyers are 3.6 times more likely to suffer from depression compared to other professions. These statistics highlight the urgent need for mental health support within our profession. If you or someone you know is struggling, the New Jersey Lawyers Assistance Program (NJLAP) offers confidential, free services tailored to the unique stressors faced by legal professionals.
