The power of emotional intelligence is just as important as cognitive intelligence. Especially in Nursing. So How Do You Develop Emotional Intelligence? 1. Know our emotions. Feel it, notice it and name it. This is how you get to self-awareness - the ability to recognize feelings as they happen. We have to learn how to manage our emotions. This also includes learning how to have personal power, internal motivation, emotional self-control, and delayed gratification. 2. Read the room and learn to recognize emotions in others. A reminder that Black Women have the right to feel however they want to today. And that’s ok. With anticipatory stress of current events in politics and the preparation of disrespect, misogynior, and patriarchy that’s going to come their way on all media platforms - Black Nurses may be feeling optimistic, excited, empowered, deflated, tired and devalued at the same time. And they may show up to work with these feelings and emotions hidden or on their sleeves. And that may be challenging to show up bright, cheery and full of confidence. Let’s be mindful to hold space for them as they care for others. Instead of asking, “How are you?”, try: ✔️What color is your heart today? ✔️How can I support you? ✔️What have you done just for you today? ✔️What are your top three feelings today? ✔️What thoughts are circling in your brain? Nurses are humans 1st. Feeling and emotions can be hard to shift, especially while still processing. There's a lot of evidence that proves the importance of soft skills in Nursing leadership and during the recruiting/ hiring process. Soft skills include professionalism, teamwork, communication, and listening skills, as well as time management, problem-solving, leadership, and empathy. And we know these soft skills are essential in the workplace because they highlights a person's emotional and social intelligence. It tells Human Resources and Leadership how well an employee fits with the culture of the team.
