The energy was buzzing at #NYPMorganStanley during a pep rally to cheer on the New York Mets as they continue their charge into October! Our pediatric patients got into the fall baseball spirit, as Mr. and Mrs. Met and former player and Mets analyst Todd Zeile joined them to make signs, play games, and enjoy other fun activities. Join us in wishing the team good luck with a #LGM in comments! ⚾️🧡💙

#NYP patient Kiley Durham began a long and complex battle in 2017, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She beat her initial diagnosis, but later developed a brain tumor and then cancer in her cerebrospinal fluid. Although her condition was considered terminal, Kiley’s team of specialists at NewYork-Presbyterian never gave up, and they found a solution to fight Kiley’s cancer. Today, Kiley is cancer-free, spending time with the people she loves and creating art. #NYP heart patient Yasin Samad, 9, proudly invited his pediatric cardiologist, Dr. Maria Thanjan of #NYPQueens, to his school classroom to explain his heart condition and spread awareness about congenital heart diseases. Yasin was born with a congenital condition called tetralogy of Fallot and needed two open-heart surgeries before he turned 2. Last year, when he and his family learned he needed a new heart valve, they decided to participate in a clinical trial at #NYPMorganStanley for a valve that can be expanded via a minimally invasive procedure as he grows. During the class visit, Dr. Thanjan explained that Yasin is a “heart pioneer” who is paving the way for other children with the condition. She also taught them how to listen to their own hearts using a stethoscope. This #WorldHeartDay, join us in celebrating Yasin, and all heart patients, for their strength and resilience by dropping a ❤️ in the comments. Dr. Irina Sobol, a cardiologist and medical director of the Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) Program at #NYPWeillCornell, understands that delivering exceptional care includes building long-term patient relationships. In this video, she shares how establishing trust was essential to helping a patient overcome his reluctance to receiving the LVAD he needed to treat his heart failure. #NYPColumbia pediatric gastroenterologist Dr. Joseph Picoraro is one of only several doctors in the country who can perform endoscopic electroincision therapy (EIT) as a way to treat narrowing of the intestines, known as strictures, in children with digestive conditions. While still a novel approach, Dr. Picoraro (pictured with a poster he presented on a small EIT study) believes it helps treat strictures with more accuracy while preserving the bowel. Tim Jarema, 70, looked forward to fishing and spending more time at sea in retirement. But a routine physical in November 2023 revealed elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in his blood, and a biopsy later confirmed prostate cancer – a disease he’d beaten seven years earlier. Tim was referred to #NYPColumbia, where his urologists recommended focal therapy, a minimally invasive treatment that uses an electrical current to target and kill cancer cells. He underwent the procedure this past June. “There was absolutely no pain and no side effects,” he said. After a recent screening confirmed no evidence of disease, Tim says he can’t wait to share his love of fishing with the next generation, having just welcomed his first grandchild. Join us in celebrating Tim’s recovery as he casts off for the next big one! NewYork-Presbyterian was thrilled to host a Sickle Cell Patient Experience Day at National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) headquarters in Manhattan last week. Our patients and families had the chance to meet former Knicks star John Starks and NBA veteran Danny Green, and shoot hoops with #NYP’s special-edition Sickle Cell Awareness Ball. They also faced off against each other virtually on NBA 2K25. #NYP recently launched a Sickle Cell Awareness Ball campaign and the #IBall4SickleCell social media challenge to raise awareness about sickle cell disease, which affects more than 100,000 Americans.
