The Niagara County Center for Economic Development Industrial Development Agency has authorized the transfer of the balance of the available cash in its Cataract Tourism Fund — roughly $204,000 — to the Niagara Falls Urban Renewal Agency (NFURA) to allow the agency to acquire between 22 and 23 north Main Street properties previously owned by Blue Cardinal Capital and the Rapids Theatre. NFURA told the county agency that the purchase of those properties, for a total of $1.74 million, will allow the city, the state, Niagara County and the Niagara Orleans Land Bank to control future development in the blighted Main Street corridor by blocking a single developer from acquiring all or a majority of the properties.

Editorial: Infrastructure not sexy, but so needed Last week’s news that Clinton County has completed an infrastructure project at the former Clinton County Airport property might not seem very exciting, but it is a critical step toward a strong economic future of the region. If you want good development in the area, you need to provide the services businesses need, and that is roads, water, sewer, utilities and so forth. Otherwise, businesses can go elsewhere to find a location that has these essentials. Chamber President Garry Douglas has long been a champion for the area and has been instrumental in bringing good companies to area. He’s been so successful and has left such a positive mark on the North Country that officials have seen fit to name the new road near the development site Douglas Boulevard. A fitting tribute indeed. Douglas will be joined by players like Molly Ryan, the county's IDA economic development director and the chamber’s Joel Wood in tackling the task of bringing in viable companies to create jobs and boost the local economy. For the sake of a stronger local economy and a brighter future for the region, let’s wish them well. Read the complete editorial at the Press Republican https://lnkd.in/g8tt7wje

The Regeneron effect The pharmaceutical company has grown into one of the Capital Region’s largest employers over the past decade. Now it’s expanding to Albany and Saratoga counties Two billion dollars. - That’s how much biotechnology firm Regeneron has invested approximately in its Capital Region manufacturing capabilities since 1993, when it bought its first building between Columbia Turnpike and Route 151 at what it calls its Red Mill campus. Just last month, the Tarrytown-headquartered drugmaker paid $42.5 million in cash for a million-plus-square-foot former commercial printing complex in Saratoga Springs that has access to ample power and rail infrastructure. Regeneron said in a public filing that it owns more than 1.2 million square feet of manufacturing, research, office and warehouse space in Rensselaer County, not including a 341,000-square-foot “fill/finish” facility off Tempel Lane in East Greenbush that’s undergoing validation by regulatory authorities. How Federal Investment Spurs Growth in Oswego County, NY Oswego County, NY experienced a noteworthy acceleration in its growth trajectory following the award of a $2.5 million grant to the County of Oswego Industrial Development Agency (IDA) by the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA). These vital funds are designated to bolster the infrastructure in the expanded sector of the L. Michael Treadwell Oswego County Industrial Park, nestled in the Town of Schroeppel. The initiative, which kicked off in 2021 with the procurement of a 185-acre expansion site by the IDA, effectively doubled the size of the existing industrial park. This significant decision was prompted by the dwindling usable space within the current 135-acre industrial park and an increased interest from both new and expanding businesses. The federal investment will provide public infrastructure that will include the construction of over 3,700 feet of new public roadway, over 4,200 feet of new sanitary sewer, and over 3,700 feet of new public waterlines. Complementing the EDA investment, $2.5 million in IDA funds with be matched to prepare 10 shovel ready sites. Notably, the strategic site resides within a 10-mile radius of the $100B mega semifab site of Micron Technology, benefitting from convenient highway and rail access. Operation Oswego County, Inc. Construction For Ripley Shovel-Ready Site To Begin In Spring Rep. Nick Langworthy and U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer announced that the County of Chautauqua Industrial Development Agency (CCIDA) will receive a federal grant of $1,999,999 for the Ripley Interstate Shovel Ready Site project. The project is proposed to generate $60 million in private investment and create 320 new jobs in the region. “This significant investment will drive this project forward and give the community new opportunities for economic growth. As someone who grew up in the Southern Tier, I will always make it a priority to bring our federal tax dollars home for meaningful efforts like this one.” “Federal dollars continue to power Chautauqua County to build the shovel-ready infrastructure in Ripley needed to land new employers and good-paying jobs,” Schumer said. “This additional nearly $2 million federal boost will help Chautauqua County move one step closer to making this project to build a home in this region for the future of industry a reality. The county IDA has been working on this project for several years, seeking various funding sources. The original price tag for the shovel-ready site was $16 million. https://lnkd.in/g5n_k6CF

Tompkins County IDA Greenlights Southworks Project The Tompkins County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) has voted 6-1 to approve a nearly $85 million 20-year tax abatement for the long-anticipated SouthWorks development project during a meeting on October 9. Southworks is a massive $587 million proposal to revitalize an industrial site on South Hill that has sat vacant for decades. Supporters of the project say it will deliver much needed housing, jobs, and economic growth, but critics worry about the impact of the tax abatement granted to the project and its potential strain on public services and the local tax base. According to Ithaca Area Economic Development President Heather D. McDaniel, CEcD, AICP, EDFP, the developers are requesting tax abatements totaling nearly $85 million over the next two decades to make the project viable. Without this phased-in tax relief developers say the plan for SouthWorks would not move forward. https://lnkd.in/gPjxdA4P
