Congratulations to the crew of Virginia-class submarine USS Washington (#SSN787), which was recently awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. It is the Department of Defense’s highest unit award and recognizes military units for outstanding performance and heroism in action against enemy forces. Newport News Shipbuilding proudly delivered SSN 787 to the US Navy in 2017.

About us
For 137 years, the ships built at Newport News Shipbuilding, like the American shipbuilders who built them, have served our nation in peace and war, in times of adversity and in times of abundance. Our legacy of “Always Good Ships,” includes the design, construction, overhaul and repair of more than 800 ships for the U.S. Navy and commercial customers. Today, Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is the nation’s sole designer, builder and refueler of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and one of only two shipyards capable of designing and building nuclear- powered submarines. We also provide fleet services for naval ships. We are the largest industrial employer in Virginia, employing more than 25,000 people, many of whom are third- and fourth-generation shipbuilders.

I was saddened to hear Thelma Mothershed Wair, one of the ship’s sponsors for Virginia-class submarine Arkansas (#SSN800), passed away over the weekend. She was a member of the historic group known as the Little Rock Nine, the first African American students to attend all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, during desegregation. It was an honor to welcome Thelma and other members of the Little Rock Nine to Newport News Shipbuilding in 2022 to celebrate SSN 800’s keel laying. As teenagers, Thelma and the other members of the Little Rock Nine helped change our nation’s history. She then dedicated her career to education – spending decades as a teacher and counselor. Her inspirational legacy lives on through all of us, and through SSN 800 and the generations of US Navy sailors who will serve on the submarine. I hope you all will join me in sending heartfelt condolences to Thelma’s family and friends. I invite you to read more about her here: https://lnkd.in/eaVbVJBU

#ThrowbackThursday to Oct. 11, 1975, when Newport News Shipbuilding laid the keel for USS Carl Vinson (#CVN70) and christened USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (#CVN69) during a dual ceremony. About 8,000 people were on hand to watch the keel authentication for CVN 70 before witnessing CVN 69 Ship’s Sponsor Mamie Eisenhower – the widow of President Dwight D. Eisenhower – christen that aircraft carrier. Following the christening, CVN 69 was launched and moved to a pier for outfitting work. Take a look at these photos from that busy day 49 years ago.
