In 2017, the Gilberts established NF Forward, a nonprofit 501c3 organization. It shares a vision with the Gilbert Family Foundation to eradicate NF by funding groundbreaking, cutting-edge NF research. NF Forward strives to raise awareness about NF among a wide range of individuals and invite their support of this innovative vision. NF Forward’s signature event is beNeFit, a major gala held at Cobo Center in downtown Detroit every November. Since 2013, beNeFits I-VII raised over $30 million for NF research and attracted more than 1,800 supporters annually to join the fight to end NF.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) affects one in 2,500 live births, and it does not discriminate. Every single person living with NF deserves better. Today is #WorldNFAwarenessDay, so it's fitting that we should announce a $21M investment into the Next Generation NF1 Models Initiative, a new research program that will help us accelerate a cure. Our commitment supports 18 unique research grants representing cutting-edge universities and medical research institutions from across the United States and Europe, and will help us address a need for more advanced models of NF1 disease. These models are critical to developing viable treatment options for patients living with NF. The preclinical models generated in these projects will ultimately be hosted at the Nick Gilbert Neurofibromatosis Research Institute (NGNRI) when it opens in 2027.
