As part of our #HispanicHeritageMonth campaign, we’re proud to highlight the incredible work of our member organization, Hospice & Community Care. We asked the Hospice & Community Care team about their strategies and resources for increasing awareness and utilization of hospice care among Spanish-speaking individuals. Here’s what they shared: “We have found that the most effective strategy for bringing hospice care into the Latine community is to build rapport with key community leaders, such as pastors, so that we can work together to dispel the myths Latines associate with hospice care. Over the years, our organization has participated in community outreach events such as the local Hispanic Festival; we have even hosted an all-day seminar for pastors and church leaders in Latine community.” We also asked them to share a specific story of successful engagement with the Hispanic community: “Project Talk initiative is a 5-year randomized controlled research initiative funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Project Talk Trial aims to engage underserved communities in Advance Care planning and empower them to start conversations about their end-of-life goals and wishes. Project Talk was conducting research in partnership with California University. Hospice & Community Care became aware of their research and applied to be considered. We were chosen to participate in the study and met with the researchers multiple times to plan for outreach in the community. They provided all the outreach materials in Spanish for social media and posters. We chose the location and an elderly Latine population residing in a subsidized housing building in the heart of the Latine community in Lancaster City. Once we understood the assignment we contacted our community allies: a Catholic church, as they have a community room; a Spanish professor who volunteered her students’ time, and the Resident Coordinator at the housing program for the outreach to the participants. On October 7, 2023, we had 25 participants complete their advanced care planning with our guidance and in discussion with their relatives and volunteer interpreters. We offered an incentive of a meal and a Walmart gift card to increase participation.”

"A group of 39 organizations recently penned a letter urging congressional leaders to reconsider the expiration of telehealth waivers set forth during the public health emergency. Currently set to expire Dec. 31, these flexibilities allowed hospices to perform routine home care visits virtually and conduct face-to-face recertification visits. The National Alliance for Care at Home spearheaded the effort." Read more in this recent Hospice News article: https://lnkd.in/eZC9enak

As we honor #HispanicHeritageMonth, we reflect on the importance of inclusive and compassionate care for all. Today, we are spotlighting Alliance member Empath Health. We asked the Empath team what effective strategies and resources have helped them increase awareness and utilization of hospice care among Spanish-speaking individuals. Here’s what they shared: “The care teams at Empath Health hospices are dedicated to providing extraordinary full-life care to each individual and family of every culture with compassion, understanding, and respect. Traditionally, Hispanic patients are underrepresented among the hospice population. That is why our teams seize every opportunity to connect with the Hispanic community. They have found it is key to partner with established and trusted leaders within the community to help deliver the message about the compassionate end-of-life care Empath Health hospices deliver. We never know when the message will take root. Community Engagement Director, Maria Pepe, recently conducted an educational series about advance care planning, among other topics, for a young parent's group at the local YMCA. A 19-year-old Hispanic parent shared what they learned with their family, resulting in a hospice admission for their grandmother’s brother. Our Community Partnership Specialists provide free educational programs in English and Spanish at senior centers, service clubs, churches, neighborhood associations, and other community groups.” Anyone interested in scheduling a session or learning more information is encouraged to email Community@EmpathHealth.org or call (727) 523-3427. Let’s work together to ensure everyone receives the care they deserve.

The National Alliance for Care at Home (the Alliance) is spearheading a national coalition of hospice, home health, and palliative care organizations to urge Congress to extend vital telehealth flexibilities that have enhanced both hospice and home health care across the United States. “Telehealth has transformed care delivery in both hospice and home health, particularly in rural and underserved areas,” said Steve Landers MD, MPH Landers, CEO for the Alliance. “Virtual F2F recertifications have freed up clinicians to focus more on urgent patient care and this flexibility has allowed providers to continue serving patients efficiently and safely. Both sectors have seen improvements in access to care and a reduction in unnecessary travel burdens for providers and families.” Learn more and read the coalition's letter underscoring the importance of these flexibilities in the Alliance press release: https://lnkd.in/e-UCzZnx
