This month marks NineDot's 9th anniversary, a time to reflect on our journey from an idea to a recognized leader in urban energy solutions for New York City. Here’s a look at some of our key milestones: 🔋 2015-2019: Founded as CertainSolar and backed by a $490,000 matching grant from the @Department of Energy’s SunShot Initiative, co-founders Adam Cohen, David Arfin, and Nalin Kulatilaka began with the idea of locking in solar pricing so it’s always cheaper than electric utility pricing. 🔋 2020-2022: After completing two fuel-cell energy projects in high need locations, we became NineDot Energy, reflecting our new focus on building community energy sites for the NYC area. We received our initial growth capital from The Carlyle Group, and in August 2022, celebrated the ribbon-cutting of our first community battery site in New York City, attended by leaders from NYSERDA, Con Edison, the New York Public Service Commission, and Bronx Borough President Hon. Vanessa L. Gibson, MPA (She, Her, Hers, Ella). 🔋 2023: Our battery site in the Northeast Bronx went live, Starbucks joined as our anchor subscriber, and NineDot was ranked #5 on Crain's New York Business list of 100 Best Places to Work. We also secured additional financing from NY Green Bank and we built a wonderful community partnership with the Bronx Charter School for Better Learning. 🔋 2024: This year, we garnered an additional $225 million equity commitment from Manulife Investment Management and Carlyle, doubled our credit facility with NYGB, closed our first tax equity financing of more than $40 million, and were honored by the New York League of Conservation Voters. With a number of new NYC battery sites in construction, and more than 50 projects overall in some phase of development, we are also preparing to pilot EV charging and mobile battery programs. So where are we today? With almost 70 employees and approximately $450 million in capital, we are fully committed to supporting a cleaner, more resilient and reliable power grid for the New York City metro area, and are grateful for all the partners, suppliers, regulators, communities, elected officials and others in the energy ecosystem that are working together to make New York’s energy transition happen. #NineDotEnergy #CleanEnergy #NYCEnergy #BatteryStorage

Creating distributed clean energy solutions for the urban grid
About us
NineDot Energy creates innovative energy solutions that make the urban grid cleaner, more equitable, more resilient and less costly. Our current development focus is on building and operating battery storage sites in the New York City metropolitan area, including Westchester and Long Island. We are working to enable vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities at our projects as well. The NineDot Energy name derives from the classic mathematical puzzle for sparking out-of-the-box solutions. Our “outside the box” creativity combines business model innovation and community-centered solutions to catalyze clean energy projects in high-value parts of the electric utility grid. Based at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering Urban Future Lab in Brooklyn, New York. We have received financial support from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency (NYSERDA) and the Carlyle investment group, among others.

Last week, in collaboration with the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, we welcomed a group of students to our office in the Urban Future Lab! NineDotters Anna Lifland, David Mudrauskas, Harold Barreto, PMP, and Joe Silver shared what it’s like to work at a clean tech start-up and their nonlinear journeys to NineDot. The conversation highlighted the importance of building strong relationships, exploring new projects, and bringing passion into your career. The students were curious about the technical side—asking great questions about how NineDot connects to the grid, the megawatts we handle, and what it’s like working in different NYC neighborhoods. It’s inspiring to connect with young people—they are a big reason we do the work we do. #CleanTechCareers #NineDotEnergy #CleanEnergy #EnergyTransition #NYCCleanEnergy

Congrats to Governor Hochul, the NYSERDA and New York State Department of Public Service teams, and the entire solar industry for hitting New York’s six gigawatt distributed solar goal a year ahead of schedule! This is fantastic news and a testament to the state’s commitment to a cleaner, greener future and the clean energy industry’s ability to rally around an audacious goal. At NineDot, we’re working hard to help New York hit its ambitious energy storage goal of 6 GW by 2030. With the New York Public Service Commission’s passage of the Storage Order earlier this year, New York’s storage industry is well positioned to follow the solar industry’s shining example. #CleanEnergy #Solar #EnergyStorage #Sustainability #NYCleanEnergy #BatteryStorage
Solar success!! 🎯New York has installed six gigawatts of distributed solar, achieving its Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act goal a year ahead of schedule. Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the six gigawatts of distributed solar, enough to power more than one million homes and businesses, generated approximately $9.2 billion in private investment, with over 14,000 solar jobs created statewide. New York is the national leader in community solar deployments allowing renters, low-income residents, and others who cannot install their own panels to participate in and benefit from solar energy. https://lnkd.in/eJQS94v3

We had a fantastic time Tuesday night at this year’s New York League of Conservation Voters (NYLCV) New York City Cocktail Party! We are so grateful and humbled to have been chosen as the honoree in recognition of our hard work at NineDot. With over 300 attendees, the energy in the room was electric! We heard from Adriano Espaillat and Julie Tighe about the urgent need to double down on our climate goals in New York, and our Co-founder and CTO Adam Cohen highlighted how even with a great plan, the unexpected always arises, and you need real-world experience and strong partners to navigate the challenges of an industry like ours. Adam engaged the crowd with a little song he wrote especially for the event, to the tune of Road Trippin’ by the Red Hot Chili Peppers (1999): "Road trippin’ with my NineDot allies Fully charged for the peaker plant demise It’s time to green this town, it’s time for carbon free Let’s go charge up all across the NYC Let’s go get charged, let’s go get charged" We’re thrilled to have so many great partners in our work, and we’re especially grateful for NYLCV’s strong and relentless advocacy for a more sustainable New York. #CleanEnergy #ClimatePolicy #NYLCV #EnergyTransition #EnergyStorage #Sustainability

What a high-energy NYC Climate Week this has been! The NineDot team attended some great events hosted by Canary Media Inc. and more, and took part in two gatherings that highlighted how we're bringing our expertise in stationary battery storage to new areas. On Wednesday, we had the pleasure of co-hosting a happy hour with our friends in the battery and EV industries, including NYC School Bus Umbrella Services, Inc, The AES Corporation, Transit Tech Lab, Cummins Inc., and The Mobility House. It was a great evening of conversation and collaboration. Supporting EVs and the broader electrification of transportation is critical to NYC’s energy transition and we're excited about projects we have in the works. On Thursday, we celebrated our award from The Clean Fight Energy Storage Capital Challenge, which will help fund an exciting new mobile battery project in NYC. This project features NY-manufactured batteries from Viridi — also part of the New Energy New York supply chain database — and will demonstrate the financing, permitting, and leasing of mobile batteries in dense urban areas. These batteries offer a cleaner alternative to diesel generators, reducing pollution in environmental justice communities. Even well-funded developers like us need support to pursue innovative or smaller projects, and we’re grateful to work with such committed partners and organizations as we expand beyond stationary storage into mobile batteries and electric vehicle charging. #NYCClimateWeek #EnergyStorage #CleanEnergy #BatteryStorage #Sustainability #NineDotEnergy #EVCharging #ElectricVehicles

Last week, we had the privilege of attending the FDNY Foundation Annual Dinner at the Fire Department’s training center on Randalls Island. The event gave us the chance to hear from the remarkable FDNY members who work tirelessly to keep New York safe every day. Their dedication and expertise, particularly in setting the highest safety standards for battery storage site design, continue to inspire us at NineDot as we diligently follow their lead. We were also honored to join guests from across industries, including Harvey Schwartz, CEO of The Carlyle Group and the evening's honoree. Carlyle, which provided our initial equity capital nearly three years ago, has been instrumental in our growth and mission. We left the event with a renewed sense of pride in supporting such a vital institution and the brave individuals behind it. #FDNY #FDNYFoundation #NewYorkCity #CleanEnergy #Sustainability #EnergyTransition #NYCCleanEnergy
