As we wrap up Energy Awareness Month, it’s important to remember that energy conservation isn’t just a one-month focus. It’s something we can work on all year to help reduce our carbon footprint and cut down on utility bills. Here are 5 lesser-known tips to save energy throughout the year: ➡️ Use Task Lighting: Instead of lighting up entire rooms, use desk lamps or under-cabinet lights in specific areas where you need it. This reduces the amount of energy needed compared to overhead lighting. ➡️ Close Vents in Unused Rooms: Close the vents in areas that aren’t used frequently to redirect heating or cooling to spaces where it’s needed. ➡️ Use Rugs on Bare Floors: In the winter, rugs add insulation to your floors, helping retain heat in rooms. This reduces the need for your heating system to work as hard. ➡️ Use smaller appliances: Appliances like toaster ovens, microwaves, or slow cookers, use less energy than a full-sized oven. ➡️ Seal Gaps and Insulate: Air leaks around doors, windows, and ductwork can cause your heating and cooling systems to work harder. NYSERDA’s Comfort Home program makes it easy with “seal and insulate” packages: https://on.ny.gov/3XXMzov
