Calling all middle school students, parents, teachers, and administrators: The Challenge is on! We are excited to kick off the eighth $10,000 Northern New York Community Foundation Community Spirit Youth Giving Challenge. Students attending 7th and 8th grades in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence County can now compete for a chance to award one of ten $1,000 grants to their favorite tri-county charity that helps strengthen quality of life in their community. Apply online or download an application and entry rules at nnycf.org/givingchallenge and enter by Friday, Oct. 25. The Giving Challenge is made possible through the generosity of all who give to the Friends of the Foundation Annual Community Betterment Fund, a major gift from an individual donor, and corporate support from Community Bank, N.A. Kenneth V. Sawyer passed away in 2008, and his wife, Jeannette Remp Sawyer, in 2015. This year, their community fund awarded $57,446 to 13 nonprofits working to strengthen the quality of life for residents of the communities they cherished during their lifetimes. The Rock Charitable Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation welcomes applications for 2024 grant support from qualified charitable organizations, houses of worship, cemeteries, or governmental entities that serve St. Lawrence County residents. While projects that focus on each charitable purpose will be evaluated for funding, those that aid St. Lawrence County U.S. military veterans will receive priority consideration this year. Organizations are encouraged to apply by Friday, Sept. 6, 2024. The Rock Charitable Fund was established at the Community Foundation in 2019 through a bequest from St. Lawrence County resident and retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Marjorie J. Rock, who passed away in February 2017 at the age of 96. Because of her foresight and thoughtful generosity, Ms. Rock’s desire to support St. Lawrence County will be perpetuated for generations to come. Lewis County Judge George R. Davis passed away in 2010 at the age of 91. Fourteen years later, he continues to make a profound impact on his beloved community of Lowville. The Youth Philanthropy Council of the Northern New York Community Foundation is pleased to announce $20,000 in grant funding for six North Country nonprofit organizations that will support a wide range of community programs and initiatives.
