About us

NCCAT provides interdisciplinary, topic-specific, residential seminars for pre–K through 12th-grade teachers focusing on early grades literacy and digital learning. NCCAT serves public school educators from all 100 counties in North Carolina, including all 115 school systems, charter schools, and 2 federal school systems. According to external evaluations, the NCCAT Beginning Teachers Program has demonstrated solid success in supporting beginning teachers, increasing their effectiveness, and retaining them in the profession. NCCAT also offers site-based programming to help educators align curriculum with the Common Core State and North Carolina Essential Standards.

  • Congratulations to Stephanie Uhrich! We are thrilled to announce that Stephanie Uhrich, a dedicated Math and Science teacher at Saluda Elementary School in Polk County Schools (polkschools.org), has been awarded the prestigious Susan S. McHugh NCCAT Honored Educator Scholarship for 2024-2025! This scholarship, made possible by the generous Stuart and Margaret L. Forbes Foundation of Polk County, covers substitute teacher costs and provides $250 for classroom use. It honors Susan S. McHugh, a former superintendent of Polk County Schools and life-long educator.   • We are incredibly grateful to all the educators who joined us for the "Harnessing Design Thinking Residential Application" at NCCAT Cullowhee. In our 21st century, where digital content is everywhere, it's exciting to see the resurgence of tabletop gaming. From light social games to intellectually intense, sophisticated experiences, today's tabletop games offer something for everyone. Our participants delved into various contemporary game mechanics and utilized design thinking approaches to create their original games.   • Thank you to the teachers who joined us for "The Power of Picture Books" in Ocracoke! Picture books are powerful and engaging texts that can help all elementary students succeed in language arts, math, science, social studies, and the arts. Participants walked away with enhanced knowledge of the effective use of picture books, five picture books, and a fantastic read-aloud professional book. We appreciate everyone who participated and made this event a success! This program was funded in part by a generous grant from Believe in Reading.   • Open to all teachers to help find solutions in their classes. “Recipe for Problem Solving K-5,” led by research scholars from the William and Ida Friday Institute for Education Innovation at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching in Cullowhee, will provide K-5 teachers with a comprehensive introduction to computational thinking and practical teaching strategies. To integrate into their classrooms, participants will explore the fundamentals of computational thinking, coding, and age-appropriate programming tools. By the end of the training, teachers will feel confident in writing lesson plans integrating computational thinking to teach creative and engaging lessons integrating the NC content standards, NC K-5 computer science standards, and the NC Digital Learning Standards for Students.
