Thank you to the teachers who joined us for "The Power of Picture Books" in Ocracoke! Picture books are powerful and engaging texts that can help all elementary students succeed in language arts, math, science, social studies, and the arts. Participants walked away with enhanced knowledge of the effective use of picture books, five picture books, and a fantastic read-aloud professional book. We appreciate everyone who participated and made this event a success! This program was funded in part by a generous grant from Believe in Reading. Some children learn to write with relatively little effort. Others need explicit systematic instruction. Our schools and classrooms should be places where ALL students are not only engaged, but also see how writing fits into their lives. The truth is this: Literacy work is nuanced. Explicit teaching is powerful and supports student learning. At the same time explicit teaching in isolation can hinder learning. K-3 teachers, administrators and coaches: Come join me for a nuanced conversation about integration, vocabulary and phonics. https://lnkd.in/e6E_gJgy Come alone or better yet bring a team consisting of teachers, administrators and coaches. l will be doing demonstration lessons in K-3 classrooms in both phonics and vocabulary instruction. There will also be plenty of time to dig into how to bring this back to your school or district. If you have any questions please reach out and I'll do my best to answer them. #paramuslearningdays #ConnectTheDots #literacy #phonics #vocabulary #LiteracySolutions #lastingimpact

Professional Learning Days are fundamental to provide our teachers to always be on the cutting edge of the teaching, education and academic skillset. Recently, our Primary teachers at St Brigid's College participated in a professional learning workshop delivered by Knowledge Society. The 1-day workshop unpacked the Science of Learning and Cognitive Load Theory and how it is translated into high impact instructions for students from Kindergarten to Year 6. The session also emphasised the need for ‘getting reading right’, to improve student outcomes in literacy and covered the pace and fidelity of phonics, the introduction of close and critical reading as strategies to improve reading competence and the important of encouraging the use of more ambitious text.
