🚨 BREAKING NEWS: City and police sued for Illegal eviction in Shelton, WA 🏠⚖️ Northwest Justice Project has filed a lawsuit against Crossroads Housing, the city of Shelton, and four police officers for the unlawful eviction of Michelle Engles, a disabled woman in her 60s, from her transitional housing apartment. • The eviction bypassed legal procedures, violating Ms. Engles' rights. • This case highlights a disturbing trend of housing providers and local authorities circumventing the law. • This lawsuit brings out the critical need for stricter oversight of housing programs and law enforcement practices to end such abuses. "I was terrified of being homeless again," Ms. Engles said. "The police came to my apartment several times, threatened to arrest me, and finally escorted me out with my hands behind my back. They treated me like a criminal in my own home." What are your thoughts on this issue? Have you or someone you know experienced similar treatment? Share your stories in the comments below. • This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we reflect on the challenges faced by Native American communities in Washington State and the efforts to address them. The Northwest Justice Project (NJP) partners with tribal communities and urban native organizations to provide legal aid through its Native American Unit (NAU) and attorneys in field offices across the state. The NAU focuses on cases involving state and federal agencies' policies that disproportionately impact Native communities. This includes issues that protect the rights and culture of Native American children and families and economic security. Behind the legal arguments are real people profoundly affected by these issues. NAU client, Sashina, shared her gratitude, "I'm thankful for everything that Northwest Justice has done to help me get on my feet." The NAU assisted Sashina in winning a custody case under the Indian Child Welfare Act and later in resolving license suspension issues related to unpaid legal financial obligations. "After the amount owed for a suspended license in Lincoln County had skyrocketed to well over one thousand dollars—including compounded interest—my attorney was able to completely eliminate a debt that had been over my head for over six years," she recounted. With each case, clinic, and lawsuit, NJP works to ensure that legal roadblocks don't harm basic human needs or impede the exercise of treaty rights. The partnership between NJP and Native American communities in Washington drives positive change, working towards a more just and equitable society for all. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #NWJusticeProject
