Cynthia Bosh, a clinical director at Northwestern Medicine, has always had a passion for running. She competed in track and cross country during high school but stopped running after graduation. It wasn’t until years later, after seeing a high school friend complete the Chicago Marathon, that she felt inspired to run again. Cynthia set a personal goal to run a marathon by age 45. In 2012, at age 45, she went above and beyond this goal by finishing her second Chicago Marathon. Eventually, Cynthia qualified for the Boston Marathon and ran it twice, running the second one in an impressive 3 hours and 39 minutes. Then she set her sights on a new goal: Completing all six major world marathons: Chicago, Boston, New York, London, Berlin and Tokyo. This earns you a special medal called the six-star medal, awarded by Abott World Marathon Majors. After checking New York, Berlin and London off her list, Cynthia started preparing for Tokyo. During this time, Cynthia started to experience discomfort in her groin and hips. After medical evaluation, she discovered she had a torn labrum. Committed to her goal of completing the Tokyo Marathon, Cynthia underwent surgery on August 15, 2023, with Northwestern Medicine Orthopaedic Surgeon Sanjeev Bhatia, MD. She began physical therapy two days later. Her physical therapist Tim Turner helped her get to the start line of the Tokyo Marathon. In March 2024, six months after surgery, Cynthia crossed the finish line of the Tokyo Marathon, where she earned her six-star medal. Congratulations, Cynthia!
