From September 15 to October 15 each year, the United States observes National Hispanic Heritage Month to celebrate the contributions and influence of people who are Hispanic and Latin American. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, members of the Northwestern Medicine Champion Network Latinx Chapter, a workforce resource group that advocates for inclusion and empowers workforce members of Latin American and Hispanic descent, reflect on what this month means to them and how they plan to commemorate it. #NMBetter

We’re proud to serve in our local communities. Members of the Northwestern Medicine Champion Network Latinx Chapter, a workforce resource group, enjoyed participating in the MiMedico Community Health Fair in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. Attendees received free health screenings, family activities and resources for a healthier lifestyle. Thank you to those chapter members who volunteered their time to support this important event. #NMBetter

A day in the life of someone with trigeminal neuralgia is often filled with excruciating pain and difficulty. Simple tasks like brushing teeth and putting on makeup can be agonizing. Our Telly Award-winning video follows WGN’s Pat Tomasulo and his wife Amy, who lives with this invisible disease. #NMBetter

Trupti Patel had no lung cancer risk factors. She never smoked and was never exposed to any substances like asbestos that can increase lung cancer risk. Nevertheless, she developed a rare type of lung cancer that didn’t respond to traditional treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. Trupti joined a clinical trial at ROBERT H. LURIE COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER OF NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, with the support of her Northwestern Medicine medical oncologist Jyoti D. Patel, MD. Now, she has no evidence of cancer and is a strong advocate for clinical trials and receiving health care at academic health systems like Northwestern Medicine. Trupti says, “Progress comes from participation. Did I know if the clinical trial medication would work? No. But, it was better than doing nothing.” Apart from staying upbeat during treatment and being “someone who wanted to live to see the next James Bond movie,” Trupti was motivated by the fact that her participation in this clinical trial also helps advance treatment for other people. Thanks for sharing your story, Trupti! Learn more about clinical trials at nm.org/clinicaltrials. #NMBetter
