Our SNAP Shopper Scorecard highlights how retailer selection and spending differs between SNAP and non-SNAP households. 💲 SNAP shoppers spend an average of $740 on groceries monthly (+20% vs. non-SNAP shoppers), shop an average of 6.4 retailers each month for groceries (vs. 5.9), and spend an average of $21.56 per grocery trip (-13%). 🏬 In the 12M period ending 7/31/24, Walmart captured 25.8% of SNAP shoppers’ annual grocery spend. 🛒 In the 12M period ending 7/31/24, the top retailers for SNAP grocery purchases were Walmart (94.3% of SNAP shoppers shopped), Dollar Tree (78.4%), Target (60.5%), Amazon (51.8%), and Kroger (49.9%). 🚀 Alpha: The Next Generation The U.S.’s youngest generation - Gen Alpha - is here and ready to spend. Defined as those born from 2010 onwards, this generation is already responsible for more than $28 billion in direct spending, and its spending power is only going to grow. 💲 53% of Gen Alpha parents report giving some sort of allowance to their children, with the average weekly allowance being $22 for personal spending and saving. 🧸 Gen Alpha uses their allowance dollars to purchase toys (48%), snacks (42%), beverages (31%), entertainment (31%), and electronics (29%). 35% of Gen Alpha households have a shared physical shopping list, while 14% have a shared digital list. Numerator has updated our SNAP Trip Tracker, which looks at longitudinal trends in SNAP & WIC usage and showcases how the frequency, composition, and location of these SNAP shopping trips have changed over time. 🥫 In July 2024, 4.5% of all FMCG grocery trips utilized SNAP benefits. 🛒 Grocery trips where SNAP benefits are used tend to be larger than non-SNAP trips, both in overall spend (+$10) and in units purchased (+3). 💲 In July 2024, the average spend per unit for SNAP grocery trips was $3.60, compared to $3.73 for all grocery trips. 📈 For the last three months ending 7/31/24, traditional grocers captured 41.2% of in-store SNAP grocery trips (vs. 38.6% YA).
