Soccer is life for us too, Askari! Askari has been with Oakland Genesis since our earliest days. This agile defender joined our 2009 boys’ squad during the height of the pandemic, back when we were still leading virtual soccer drills over Zoom. When he joined our team, he had zero soccer experience. But as soon as Askari touched the ball, something just clicked. Askari’s transformation over four years—growing into a confident player, supportive teammate, and diligent student—embodies the spirit of our program. A lot.” -Rosa, mother of Oakland Genesis Academy student-athlete, Yaretzi Corral This summer, as part of Oakland Genesis’s new internship program, we connected Yaretzi with Lineage Logistics, a Fortune 500 company in San Francisco, to begin a paid summer internship program focused on data and computer science. We are thrilled for Yaretzi and so proud of her. (More to come on the start of Oakland Genesis’ career development initiatives!) Thank you so much to Sandia National Laboratories for sponsoring our academic program and equipping our scholar-athletes with the teachers and materials they need to grow and innovate! Sandia National Laboratories is a local organization focused on using science and technology to create a peaceful and free world. They are also active supporters of STEM programs across the Bay Area and recently granted Oakland Genesis funding to support our Beyond High School initiative, a program that prepares our Academy scholar-athletes for life after high school graduation. Beyond High School’s long-term objective is to ensure that 100% of participants graduate high school with college eligibility and career readiness. Our scholar-athletes spend over 100 hours each year with us in the classroom, for up to seven years. They are improving their grades, enhancing their STEM skills, and improving their confidence and engagement in academic settings. The program provides extended learning programming and opportunities with an emphasis on STEM education and facilitates an internship program that has placed multiple participants in paid summer internships in STEM fields.
