Occupational Therapy NI had the pleasure of exhibiting at the inaugural Menopause NI conference on #worldmenopauseday ✨ Margaret and Corinna thoroughly enjoyed the day 👍🏼 They had the opportunity to hear from many menopause experts including Dr Andrea Latimer, Michelle McGinley from the Employers Federation, and Adele Davidson and Gary Kane from Queen’s University Belfast Diversity, Inclusion, and Staff Wellbeing Unit 🌟 They attended three highly informative workshops focused on: 🔹nutrition facilitated by Jane McClenaghan 🔹Fitness with Geraldine McAleenan 🔹Empowering the menopause with Belinda O'Neill They had a lot of interest from the delegates on the support Occupational Therapy NI can offer to organisations and employees in terms of occupational health and workplace training 💜 Main takeaway points: ▶️ Menopause is a health and safety issue in the workplace ▶️ Prioritise protein and incorporate it into every meal. AIM for 25-30kg each meal. ▶️ Include healthy fats in our diets as we NEED it ▶️ Incorporate weights into daily exercise routine. You can start off using your body weight. This is so important for our BONE HEALTH 🦴 Well done to Siobhan Kearney, Menopause NI founder, and the host, Marie Louise Connelly, for facilitating a great day and raising awareness of Menopause in the Workplace 👏🏼 #occupatuonaltherapyni #valueofot #menopause #menopauseintheworkplace #menopauseawareness #workplacewellbeing #occupationaltherapyinwomenshealth #occupationaltherapyinoccupationalhealth

Today is World Mental Health Day ✨ Today, we come together to raise awareness about mental health, particularly in the workplace, where many of us spend a significant portion of our lives 🏫 This year’s theme emphasises the importance of supporting mental health in professional environments, and as occupational therapists working in occupational health, Occupational Therapy NI plays a crucial role in this vital area Why Workplace Mental Health Matters❗️ Mental health is just as important as physical health. A supportive workplace can lead to improved employee well-being, increased productivity, and reduced absenteeism. Yet, many individuals silently struggle with mental health challenges, which can affect their performance and overall quality of life. It’s essential that we create and foster an environment where employees feel safe to discuss their mental health needs and seek help without fear of stigma. Occupational Therapy role in Supporting Mental Health: As occupational therapists, our focus is on helping employees navigate their mental health challenges. We provide advice to the employer on how to support the employee in the workplace such as recommending reasonable adjustments to their workloads. This might include: 🔹Flexible Work Hours: Allowing employees to start or finish their workday at times that better suit their mental health needs. 🔹Workload Management: Adjusting task assignments to ensure they are manageable and aligned with the employee’s current capabilities. 🔹Creating Breaks: Encouraging regular breaks to reduce stress and improve focus. We also provide training for Managers and Employees to equip both managers and employees with the right tools and knowledge to enable them to support their colleagues. As we observe World Mental Health Day, let’s commit to prioritizing mental health in our workplaces 💚 If you would like more information on our service, please get in touch: 📱07887 698182 📧info@occupationaltherapyni.co.uk #worldmentalhealthday #mentalhealthintheworkplace #occupationaltherapyni #valueofot #workplacehealth

What is the role of Occupational Therapy in Occupational Health❓ Our role in Occupational Health continues to be misunderstood by some 🤔 and during Occupational Health Awareness Week, we want to raise the profile of the pivotal role we play in Occupational Health provision 🔦 🔸Occupational Therapists are a valued member of the occupational health team. 🔹Occupational Therapists study the effects of health conditions on function, including work productivity, in our undergraduate training. 🔸Occupational Therapy NI has undertaken extensive postgraduate training in occupational health to better our knowledge and skills in this area and to ensure we undertake robust and thorough assessments. 🔹We provide occupational health support to employers and employees including: 👉Pre-employment assessment, where an individual discloses a disability and we support the employer to help support the employee 👉Fitness to work assessment 👉Workplace assessment 👉Ergonomic assessment 👉Functional Capacity Evaluation 🔸During the assessment we discuss with the employee how their health condition impacts on their function and productivity. 🔹We use a range of standardised and non-standardised assessments to gain a thorough understanding of the employee’s capacity for work. 🔸Following assessment, we provide the employee and employer with a concise report, outlining the assessment findings and providing advice for the employer to consider such as reasonable adjustments recommended, assistive equipment to support the employer, or additional training that may be needed. 🔹We are also on hand to answer any queries the employer or employee may have about recommendations made within the report. Please get in touch if you require further information ⬆️ 📱07887 698182 📧 info@occupationaltherapyni.co.uk Margaret McEvoy, BSc, MRCOT Corinna Keaney, BSc, MRCOT Royal College of Occupational Therapists Society of Occupational Medicine #occupationaltherapyni #valueofot #occupationalhealth #occupationaltherapyinoccupationalhealth #OHAW2023

Delighted to represent Occupational Therapy NI at the Institute of Government & Public Policy Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in the workplace conference today in Belfast. Thought provoking presentations which generated interesting discussions around EDI in all its forms. So many take home points but the main three : Reasonable adjustments in the workplace are not expensive to implement Minor groups do not require special treatment, they require the opportunity to operate/exist/work on a level playing field We can all be leaders for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion with/without legislation in place Looking forward to the next one 👍 Jude Copeland Alyson Kilpatrick Christine Sheridan (MCIPD) Andrew Smyth Neil Spottiswoode Darshan Kumar Michelle Morris Catherine Christy Steve Lazars Cara Marks CIPD Virginia Méndez Mesón Christine White Sync Living
