With $10, you can get rid of 40 pounds of plastic waste from the environment. With $250, 1,000 pounds. $250,000? 1 million pounds of plastic, cleaned up. Oceanworks® IMPAC+ programs guarantee removal of at-risk plastic – AKA low-value plastics that are harder to recycle – that could remain in (or enter) the environment. You can offset your business’s plastic footprint, or go plastic neutral, starting with just 25 cents. With projects around the world, we clear coastal waterways, collect ocean-bound plastic and recycle fishing nets. And it’s cost-effective for businesses, because it’s a centralized effort. Unfortunately … 1 million pounds is just a drop in the bucket. There’s a lot more plastic out there. But we can start with 25 cents. 1 pound. Or 1 million. And keep it going from there…

Companies keep moving the goalpost on their sustainability pledges. First it was 2022, then 2025 … next it’ll be 2030. But here’s why it doesn’t matter: I don’t think corporations need to make these big, bold claims, like transitioning to 100% recycled content in the next five years. I mean, it’s unrealistic. The “all-or-nothing” approach doesn’t really benefit anyone. Companies like McDonald’s, Coca-Cola and Unilever all promise to greatly reduce plastic use in the next 5 to 10 years. And I’m glad to see it. But the next question I have is: What happens when corporations don’t meet these goals? Is there some kind of consequence? Or do they just get to say… “We’ll try again next time”? If you’re a plastic-heavy business or a big brand, your customers don’t need perfection. It’s more productive to set smaller goals (like, using 10% recycled content by 2030). These realistic targets allow brands to reach sustainability goals in a digestible way. AND they’re more likely to reach future goals down the road. No more “all-or-nothing.”

"At Oceanworks, we are curious as to where all this waste goes. The recycling and disposal rates simply don't match production output. For instance, the largest importer of U.S. plastic scraps are recycling companies in Canada – and vice versa – but it’s not clear where that plastic ultimately ends up. Are we simply swapping trash?" https://lnkd.in/eycG4vf6

Earth Day is quickly approaching and we're shining a light on a small business making a BIG impact. Our partner 239flies.com is a brick & mortar fly fishing shop in Bonita Springs, FL. They also happen to use Shopify for their website and Shopify POS in store. In their first 12 months partnering with Oceanworks, this small business is on track to fund the reclamation of 6000 lbs of at-risk plastic pollution. How'd they do it? It's easier than you might think. So, to all the small [and big] businesses out there on Shopify... are you ready to start your sustainability journey today? https://lnkd.in/d7KJ2zAD

This one is for any organization selling products on Shopify (that's about 20% of all online retailers). Let's talk just how easy it can for your organization to take action against plastic pollution and engage sustainably-minded customers. We'll make it short. With the launch of PlasticPledge for Shopify, you can now integrate plastic offsets into every transaction of your storefront. Here are the facts: Set up takes less than 5 minutes. $0.50 reclaims 1lb of plastic pollution. No-code marketing tiles mean no development is required (Shopify 2.0 Themes only). You determine how much plastic you remove per order, as well as any spend thresholds customers need to reach before plastic is removed. Cap your monthly commitments. HOW MANY METRIC TONS OF PLASTIC ENTER THE OCEANS ANNUALLY?   Last week we shared a poll, asking you how much plastic waste enters the ocean each year. The answer is:   11 million tons! And this is only the amount we are aware of, there is undoubtedly more which has not been counted!   Collaborating with our new supplier Oceanworks®, we are endeavouring to combat this problem and improve the circularity of plastics. Oceanworks do this by the following methods: • Working in mismanaged waste regions to return system leakage back to the cycle (ocean and oceanbound waste) • Perfecting collection and processing to avoid downcycling though stream selectivity and material design (closed loop) • Discovering applications for low-value streams to avoid incineration & developing emissions-lean reuse options   Discover more by clicking the visual below!   #OceanPlastic #SustainableMaterials #Oceanworks #AskUltra
