About us
Sway is a cleantech startup scaling seaweed-based, rapidly compostable replacements for plastic, beginning with flexible packaging. Our patented products match the vital performance attributes of conventional plastics and are designed to plug into existing infrastructure, enabling scale and competitive pricing. Unlike plastic, however, our materials are made from an abundant, regenerative resource and decompose into healthy soil after use. In 2023, Sway won first place in the TOM FORD Plastic Innovation Prize. In 2021, Sway also won the Beyond the Bag Challenge sponsored by Closed Loop Partners and a consortium of major retailers. Sway’s solutions have garnered recognition from Vogue, Condé Nast, Forbes, Business Insider, and Fast Company. As a member of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, the Sustainable Ocean Alliance, and 1% for the Planet, Sway is working holistically to scale their product for a thriving, equitable future. Sway is headquartered in the California Bay Area. To learn more, visit swaythefuture.com.

As a material innovation company with a primary focus on fashion packaging, it was an honor to chat with Vogue Business journalist Jessica Binns about what comes next for industry sustainability amid tariff turbulence. Tariffs on sustainable packaging alternatives could create two primary reactions from brands: either continuing with existing (often plastic) solutions to avoid disruption, or pivoting to domestically-sourced alternatives. Sway is well-positioned for the latter scenario, as the majority of our manufacturing already takes place within the United States. To advocate effectively in this environment, Sway is focused on a few strategies: → Strengthening & expanding our domestic manufacturing as a strategic advantage that provides tariff resilience while supporting American jobs. → Educating brands on the total cost of ownership beyond immediate material expenses, including consumer preference trends, regulatory compliance, and potential future plastic taxes. → Developing clear case studies quantifying how our early adopters have benefited from improved brand perception and customer loyalty, providing tangible evidence that seaweed packaging delivers measurable business value — even in challenging economic conditions. Read the full article for perspectives from Alante Capital’s Karla Mora, Cascale's Colin Browne, and Stand.earth's Rachel Kitchin.
Will fair labor, decarbonization, and other sustainability strategies become non-negotiables for fashion brands navigating the chaos of a trade war? In my latest Vogue Business dispatch, I explore this pressing question with insights from Cascale CEO Colin Browne, Stand.earth’s Rachel Kitchin, Alante Capital’s Karla Mora, Sway CEO Julia Marsh, and Michelle Gabriel of IE New York College. Don’t miss their perspectives on what’s next for the industry. Read all about it here: https://lnkd.in/eyXznRmM #sustainability #fashion #tradewars #VogueBusiness #Trumptariffs
