It’s time for another round of #SeafoodMonthTrivia! 🎣 To meet rising consumer demand for seafood, the United States increasingly relies on global suppliers to supplement domestic production. What percentage of seafood do they import on average, each year? (Bonus question! Know the countries the U.S. imports from the most? Share in the comments!)

Tokyo Sustainable Seafood Summit 2024 is in the books - so much grattitude to the Seafood Legacy team for an amazing event. I had the honor of sharing the stage with Wakao Hanaoka, CEO of Seafood Legacy, and Jim Cannon CEO of SFP, to reflect on a decade of the sustainable seafood movement in Japan and the broader Asia-Pacific region and to look forward to the next 10 years (both of whom I’ve worked with in different seasons of my career, and who I look up to dearly). A few takeaways from the session: 1.) what happens in Japan affects the entire Asia-Pacific - if sustianable seafood is only driven by Western markets then we’re missing the big picture; 2.) the best solutions are locally driven, and developed collaboratively and amicably across stakeholders from industry, gov’t, and NGOs; 3.) as a business in seafood or fisheries, be fearless to take on sustainability and social responsibility - you’ll be rewarded in the end and you’ll find people willing to support you; 4.) we’re in it for the long haul - labor audits haven’t proved to be enough / it’s proactive human rights due diligence - environmentally sustainable seafood is a result of capacity building for govt (and industry), and their ability to implement fisheries mgmt - the starting point is usually simply collecting data. 5.) We have an amazing Asia Fisheries team at Ocean Outcomes - and truly the next generation of seafood champions!

#NationalSeafoodMonth Partner Highlight: National Fisheries Institute (NFI). NFI is a non-profit organization dedicated to education about seafood safety, sustainability, and nutrition. We work closely with the NFI Crab Council as their Sustainability Envoy. As the Envoy, we are responsible for helping crab producers in other countries - such as Vietnam and Thailand - meet sustainability benchmarks so the Council can provide its members in the United States with sustainable crab 👉 https://bit.ly/495cGwK

Ever wonder what makes “sustainable seafood” actually sustainable? At O2, we understand that true sustainability considers a holistic approach: reducing environmental impact, supporting a thriving seafood economy, and ensuring the protection of human rights through socially responsible practices. Over the next few weeks, we’ll explore these core tenets and highlight the important work we’re doing to support them. In the meantime, read more about how our Vision, Mission, and Values center around holistic sustainability 👉 https://bit.ly/47VFEQ8.

Head of Programmes at Humanity Research Consultancy | Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery Research | Sustainable Supply Chain | Consultancy and Policy Development

Sharing my recent report at Humanity Research Consultancy, in partnership with USAID Asia Counter Trafficking in Persons (CTIP) and Winrock International, on social sustainability and workers' rights in the tuna supply chain. The distant water fishing industry and its labour supply chain have historically lacked #transparency and #traceability, leading to the exploitation of fishers during their employment. In February 2023, the HRC team embarked on a two-week field trip to #Fiji, a major port state. During the trip, we visited fishing ports and interacted with migrant fishers, vessel operators, port agents, officers at the Indonesian Embassy, and Fijian authorities. The purpose was to study the complex dynamics between these different stakeholders and how they contribute to the vulnerability of migrant fishers. Special thanks to Charis Smuthkochorn and sara piazzano for your invaluable support throughout the research process! #distantwaterfishing #humanrights #traffickinginpersons #migrantfishermen
