About us
The Ohio Water Resources Center is the federally authorized and state-designated Water Resources Research Institute for the State of Ohio. Our mission is to enable and conduct state-relevant water-related research; foster collaboration among academic investigators, governmental bodies and water professionals; train the next generation of water scientists; and educate the public on water resources issues in Ohio. With evidence-based scientific information, we form links between water researchers and those who manage and use water.

Challenging but important work led by Ohio WRC Co-Director, John Lenhart, to learn about fate of microplastics in water treatment.
🔬 New research funded by Ohio Sea Grant is helping scientists and decision-makers better understand how #microplastics interact with drinking water treatment. Led by Prof. John Lenhart alongside PhD student Megan Jamison, the project is evaluating microplastics in treatment plants along the shore of Lake Erie and analyzing how effective treatment processes are at removing the harmful particles. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources celebrates a major milestone with the Baughman H2Ohio Wetland Restoration Project, which restored 140 acres of wetland in northeast Ohio! This project is a crucial part of improving water quality and creating habitats for wildlife. Through the H2Ohio initiative, over 100,000 acres of wetlands have been restored or preserved, advancing Ohio’s environmental sustainability goals. OWP is proud to support these efforts that align with our mission to ensure Ohio's water resources are protected for future generations. Today, we recognize #ImagineADayWithoutWater, a national campaign to raise awareness about the value of clean, reliable water. Imagine waking up to no water for drinking, cooking, or washing—what would life be like? This day reminds us that water isn’t just a convenience—it’s essential for our health, economy, and environment. In Ohio, significant research and investment are underway to address local water challenges, including aging infrastructure, agricultural runoff, and harmful algal blooms in places like Buckeye Lake and Lake Erie. Join the conversation and think about what you can do to ensure a future where no one has to imagine a day without water. Find the US Water Alliance's resources and action steps for participating in this campaign here: https://lnkd.in/gTZMAVNf

PhD candidate Michael Herman has collected and analyzed samples of Buckeye Lake’s algal bloom. This study aims to assess the use of ultrasound to diminish algal blooms. Michael can track changes in the algal populations before and after ultrasound treatment by measuring the absorbance of phycocyanin and chlorophyll, key pigments in cyanobacteria and algae. These measurements are critical in determining how effective ultrasound is in reducing harmful algal blooms, posing risks to aquatic life and water quality. In the first image, a Secchi disk is lowered into a vat of water and algae from Buckeye Lake. A Secchi disk is used to test the water clarity, which is affected by the amount of algae present. The second image includes the three control vats from Buckeye Lake. Two images show the various types of algae found after the water was analyzed. The last picture is of an ultrasound machine used on algae.
