🌍🏛️ It’s World Architecture Day, and this year’s theme is centered around creating a better urban future. Today, we reflect on our role in designing vibrant, sustainable urban spaces. One prime example? The transformative redevelopment of the former Jeffboat LLC Shipyard in Jeffersonville, Indiana. In partnership with Thrive Companies, American Commercial Barge Line (ACBL), The Wheatley Group, and the City of Jeffersonville, OHM Advisors is proud to help reimagine this historic riverfront into a thriving mixed-use district. 🌟 Student Spotlight: Meet Jenna Davis! 🌟 This month in our Student Spotlight series, we're thrilled to feature Jenna Davis, a recipient of the OHM Advisors Diversity Scholarship and summer intern. Jenna shares how the scholarship has alleviated the stress of student loans, allowing her to focus on her civil engineering studies and practical learning during her internship. 💬 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘀? This scholarship has allowed me to focus on my studies rather than the cost of school. The long-term burden of loans can be stressful, and this scholarship has helped reduce that. 💬 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲? Before I interned at OHM, I did not know the variety of roles there are in Civil Engineering. During my internship, I was able to learn about what Civil Engineering entails- CADD, surveying, construction, etc. My initial expectations were that I was going to be helping here and there with projects or completing small tasks. In reality, I was able to learn about a variety of projects with hands-on experiences. My internship has taught me a lot about the real-life projects, tasks, and processes that schooling does not always cover. 💬 𝗪𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵? For me, valuing how each person works together on a project is extremely important - no one starts and finishes a project by themselves. I also think learning to work with city/township employees to make sure they are happy with the project is important. Our job is to provide a safe and successful improvement to a municipality, and ensuring they are happy is crucial. I have learned a lot from my internship at OHM, with a major lesson to communicate and ask questions! 🔄Closing out National Roundabouts Week with one of our more creative projects—Newark, Ohio’s 5-Points Roundabout—affectionately known by locals as “The Bean!” 🌱   What started as a sewer separation project turned into an innovative redesign of one of downtown Newark’s trickiest intersections. With a little ingenuity and a lot of teamwork, we transformed a signalized five-leg intersection plagued by red light running and wrong-way driving into a unique, lima-bean-shaped urban mini-roundabout that’s safe, efficient, and pedestrian-friendly.   We even used salvaged bricks from the original pavement to craft the central island! The result? Fewer conflict points, smoother traffic, and a safer, more beautiful intersection in Newark’s historic core.   Big shoutout to the project team for turning this challenge into a creative opportunity and reimagining what roundabouts can do! 🙌   Want to know more about how we’re rethinking urban intersections?
