We are very grateful to the Oregon State Elks Association for their partnership over the last 75 years. Their invaluable support of the Oregon Elks Children's Eye Clinic, the Elks Preschool Vision Screening Program, providing quilts for kids, and so much more, has had a great impact on children's eye health in Oregon.

“One of the bigger potential benefits in the future is just increasing accessibility to care.” Oregon Health & Science University's Dr. Travis Redd discusses with Ophthalmology Times the barriers and benefits of artificial intelligence in ophthalmology. He points out that although AI has huge potential to increase accessibility to care for patients, the data sets are still too small and difficult to share. https://lnkd.in/gXi-CSYg

We were very proud to co-host the 3rd Annual Global Ophthalmology Summit in Portland with the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Global Ophthalmology Consortium. It was a fantastic experience for Casey Eye Institute's faculty, residents, alumni, and Oregon Health & Science University medical students to contribute to the conversations shaping future global ophthalmology research, patient care and training around the world. The academic ophthalmology community in the U.S. is uniquely situated to partner in public health scholarship, global eye health education, and capacity building with international partners. Pooling our resources and expertise will catalyze growth across institutions, internationally, and for faculty and learners engaged in global ophthalmology. We look forward to continuing the momentum into next year's meeting in Chicago on Aug. 15 - 17, 2025. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gvhATKN6

In the quest to cure inherited retinal diseases, Oregon Health & Science University's Casey Eye Institute was the first in the world to use a new “spreading vector” technique in humans as part of a novel gene therapy clinical trial for treatment of X-linked juvenile retinoschisis (XLRS). This trial, and others like it, are helping Casey Eye Institute open doors to sustained independence and quality of life through preserving vision for patients with rare blinding eye diseases. A little girl whose eyes had been crossing for months regained her vision and depth perception with patching supplies and glasses funded by donors. “She had 20/200 vision in one eye and was quickly losing sight,” Dr. Leah Reznick recalls. “Thanks to donor funds, we were able to provide glasses and patches, and the child’s vision improved to 20/30 in both eyes. It was life-changing." Exciting work from Dr. Brook Harkness and the Oregon Health & Science University research team to that has great potential to reduce pain after surgery.
“If you can give people information about their individual risk level for developing persistent pain after surgery, they can make a careful decision about whether they want to proceed.” Researchers at OHSU hope their findings could eventually help in the development of new screening tools and treatments for patients. #OHSUResearch

A collaborative research team is tackling glaucoma from a new angle – transforming stem cells into retinal ganglion cells and then putting them into explanted retinas. Ultimately, they are aiming to restore the critical connections damaged by #glaucoma. The team at Oregon Health & Science University is led by Ben Sivyer, and they have an innovative approach to growing stem cells, electrophysiological analysis, and collaborative research. It not only strengthens understanding of this complex disease, but also paves the way for novel treatments that could improve vision for people affected by glaucoma.
