When Annabeth Crawford's eye was seriously injured by a rooster, Doernbecher Children's Hospital and the OHSU Casey Eye Institute Elks Children's Eye Clinic were there to help. “They were amazing,” Annabeth's mother said. “They answered all my questions. They were available for messages and phone calls whenever I needed. I basically got a crash course in how the eye works. They were just 100% on top of it.” https://lnkd.in/gqnBWPha

We are thrilled to share that Dr. Ramon Barajas from Diagnostic Radiology has been awarded the Cancer Moonshot Scholars award! Dr. Barajas and Dr. Haijiao Zhang, both OHSU researchers, are two of 11 awardees nationwide; their $6.5 million in total funding will address urgent needs in brain and blood cancer treatment. This prestigious recognition supports Dr. Barajas's groundbreaking work to push cancer diagnostics and treatments to new heights. As one of only two OHSU recipients, his research will help shape the future of personalized cancer care, providing patients with innovative, targeted solutions. The Cancer Moonshot Scholars program was launched by the Biden-Harris Administration to support early-career researchers and help build a cancer research workforce that better represents the diversity of America. Congratulations to Dr. Barajas, Dr. Zhang, and the entire team driving advancements in cancer research! Read more about this incredible achievement and its impact here: https://lnkd.in/gZ47R6jY

Scientists have identified a natural compound that halts the process involved in the progression of certain forms of cancer and demyelinating conditions — those that damage the sheath, known as myelin, that surrounds neurons — such as multiple sclerosis. “We think this is a drug that could have impact in a lot of different areas." #OHSUResearch

“In honor of #BlindnessAwarenessMonth, we wanted to reach out and thank you guys for the biggest impact of our lives. Our son was born with bilateral sclerocornea and was given the opportunity to have sight thanks to his amazing cornea team and Dr. Travis Redd. Bilateral sclerocornea caused both of his eyes to be opaque with a cloudy layer over his whole eye causing no vision but slight light perception. We were told by an in-town specialist there was nothing for us to do until we were referred to Oregon Health & Science University. After our initial exam and consultation with Dr. Redd, we were given hope for the first time that they could try to do corneal transplants to attempt some vision. After going through both transplants, Silas now is showing tremendous improvements and is beating most odds that were against him. He is now able to reach for things and track objects, which is something we thought could never happen before meeting with Dr. Redd! Throughout the whole process, Silas’ care team has gone above and beyond, and continues to help support and advocate for him. We have been set up with glasses and are working to get him contacts to help improve his sight even more. We are forever grateful!” - Ellie, mom of 10-month-old Silas
