Come check out the newly revitalized Pavilion at the Lincoln Park Zoo’s Nature Boardwalk! After over a decade of framing the Chicago skyline, the Pavilion has become one of the city's most photogenic landmarks. Built in 2010, the same year as Instagram’s launch, it has served as a backdrop for photographers and countless events, from yoga classes to engagements, weddings, dance performances, and more. The Pavilion’s recently completed restoration included revitalizing the wood structure and replacing the fiberglass domes, which provide critical UV protection for open-air classes, programs, and events. Designed as a stop along the Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo, the Pavilion sits within a transformed landscape, which turned a picturesque, yet unsustainable urban pond from the 19th century into an ecological habitat buzzing with life. Beyond visual spectacle, the boardwalk is a crucial, connective habitat for resident and migratory animal populations, a popular outdoor destination and learning landscape for city residents and visitors alike, and a functional, self-sustaining solution to Chicago’s aging stormwater infrastructure. 🔗 Read more about the Lincoln Park Zoo’s Nature Boardwalk: https://lnkd.in/eak7UJzq 📸: Tom Harris

How can Brutalist buildings take on new life and purpose? Our concept for the future of the Forrestal Building in Washington, D.C., selectively “prunes,” “grafts,” and “propagates” this massive concrete structure to open it to natural light, fresh air, and new uses. It’s one of several provocative architectural proposals now on view at the National Building Museum in “Capital Brutalism,” an exhibition exploring the history, current state, and potential future of seven polarizing D.C. buildings and Metro system. Adapting this mid-century era of concrete architecture can be challenging, but with all of the carbon that went into their construction, it’s environmentally and culturally important to conserve and reuse them. Working with the building’s regular grid, our proposal removes the middle portion of the building, opening a clear view of the Smithsonian Castle and quadrangle to the north while restoring the grand axis of the L’Enfant Promenade. The building’s interior slabs are cut back to let in natural light, and the exposed edges are reclad in wood, gaining balconies and operable windows. What happens with the removed middle of the building? The 96 original precast concrete façade panels are in good condition and can be reused elsewhere. In fact, their dimensions are ideal for cladding new residential buildings that use a standard mass timber frame. Propagating much-needed housing throughout the DC metro area, the transformed Forrestal comes to exhibit the environmental and cultural benefits of creative reuse, at scales big and small. “Capital Brutalism” runs through February 17, 2025 and is co-curated by Dr. Angela M. Person and Ty Cole. Special thanks to our project collaborators, structural consultant Joe Burns of Thornton Tomasetti and visualization team Labtop Rendering. #CapitalBrutalismNBM #StudioGangOnDisplay #Brutalism

Studio Gang came together in Elkhorn, Wisconsin for our tenth year at Camp Wandawega! 🏕️ All Studio members—from Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and Paris—spent a few wonderful days reconnecting, sharing skills, sharing meals, and recharging in the great outdoors. From early-morning bird watching to late-night fireside conversations, we are so thankful to Tereasa, David, and our friends at Camp Wandawega for making this such a special place for us.

Now the third tallest building in the Chicago skyline, the design for The St. Regis Chicago asks the question: What if skyscrapers can be porous connectors, rather than barriers, for the public realm? Defining a new edge of the city, the tower tightly knits the downtown Lakeshore East community to its surroundings with unprecedented urban connections and enhanced public access to the Chicago River. Moving rhythmically in and out of plane, the overall flowing appearance of the building is the result of an alternating geometry between these three volumes. An innovative structural system allows the central volume to be lifted from the ground plane, creating a new essential pedestrian connection between the Chicago Riverwalk and the nearby community park’s outdoor recreational facilities. If you find yourself on the Chicago Riverfront this summer, don’t forget to stop and look up! Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ejxQd9t9

We had a great time hosting AIA Chicago’s LGBTQIA+ Alliance Pride Social on our Chicago rooftop last week! We gathered with local design professionals for a beautiful evening of music, dancing, and community, putting a spotlight on the importance of queer representation and identity in the architecture industry. Proceeds from the event benefit TaskForce Chicago (Taskforce Prevention and Community Services), which serves LGBTQIA+ youth on Chicago’s West Side.
