Designing a space to enable cultural life on a scale that hasn’t previously been possible in Australia’s capital, Canberra Theatre Centre (CTC) is imagined as a vibrant, multi-event, all-inclusive space that will be the anchor project for the future of Canberra’s Civic and Cultural District Together with Architectus and Arup, our design will transform and expand the existing space into a new home for performing arts in Canberra. A home that we envision as both a national landmark and an international destination for artists and audiences alike. This new cultural heart will celebrate community, diverse heritage, and artistic expression, where people come together to share in the power of performance and storytelling. We are honoured to be part of the project, and to work alongside the ACT Government and First Nations consultants, Yerrabingin Pty Ltd to create a centre of performance excellence, rooted in the region. This week, the Henning Larsen Foundation celebrated Danish architects for the 23rd year. Ane Cortzen and Johansen Skovsted Arkitekter were celebrated on Henning Larsen's birthday, August 20th, at Restaurant Orangeriet in the King's Garden in Copenhagen. Johansen Skovsted Arkitekter has received this year's honorary grant for their innovative work challenging traditional ideas of beauty by exploring form, materiality, and space. Ane Cortzen is awarded for her engaging efforts with the Danish Architecture Center (Dansk Arkitektur Center) making architecture accessible and relevant to the public through her various roles as a writer, host, and speaker. Since 2001, the Henning Larsen Foundation has held an annual celebration of Danish architecture, honoring individuals who actively contribute to progressing the field of architecture, with a particular focus on artistic quality. Congratulations to Johansen Skovsted Arkitekter and Ane Cortzen on this well-deserved honor! Read more about the event here https://hnglr.sn/3Me6itg. Images by Joachim Jacobsen, Sincere Studio.

We're onto the next phase of developing the structure and masterplan for Refshaleøen! As Copenhagen’s Refshaleøen district evolves into a dynamic cultural hub, a critical question arises: How can we propel development without compromising the area's distinctive creative spirit? In response to this challenge, we embarked on a journey into the realm of big data to shape a new urban design methodology. Our proposal celebrates the district’s character, uniting urban nature and local communities, by unlocking the potential of big data and AI technology to inform and qualify the design drivers for developing the district without losing its creative edge. Collaborating with Aalborg Universitet and Ramboll Management Consulting on the Ideas Competition for Refshaleøen, we gathered evidence from various sources, including big data, geo-social insights, biodiversity metrics, existing building stock, and calculations derived from our Urban Decarb tool. Our rich and multifaceted dataset included 35,000 Instagram posts posted on Refshaleøen between 2012 and 2023, over 300,000 Facebook posts, 150,000 events in Copenhagen, and engagement from 600,000 unique, anonymous Facebook users. Through this analysis, our Urban Impact team have identified a range of new design drivers to shape the future development of Refshaleøen. Thank you to By & Havn and Refshaleøens Ejendomsselskab for the opportunity to envision what's next for Refshaleøen. In collaboration with ADEPT, Ramboll, Atelier Loidl Landschaftsarchitekten Berlin GmbH, VOLCANO, BC architects & studies and PlanScape. Delve into all the details here https://hnglr.sn/3VxpKH4. Visuals generated from our insights using Midjourney to show what the proposed future could look like.

We’ve submitted plans to transform a 1920’s office building in London. In the heart of the city’s Marylebone neighborhood, "retrofit first" means more than adding space. At 43-45 Portman Square, we're taking a comprehensive approach to redeveloping the century-old office complex. Together with BGO, we have submitted the plan to Westminster City Council. The transformation will add a new green steppingstone to the area’s Wild West End strategy through extending Portman Square’s green garden onto the roof. Maximizing the urban greening factor using green roofs and a new roof garden, we’re creating a new local biodiversity habitat while facilitating a biophilic working environment. The development is designed to be capable of a net zero carbon operation, and to be fully electric – lowering energy intensity by up to 72%. The plans have been developed in partnership with client BentallGreenOak (BGO) on behalf of the Welput Fund. To learn more about the project, look here https://hnglr.sn/3SXClSh.

Located in Lelystad, on the Dutch island of Flevopolder, our design for BESTSELLER's 155,000 m²/1,668,400 ft² Logistics Center West (LCW) is a nod to the area’s unique topography, which is characterized by wetlands and forests. Our landscape design for the project includes the creation of an artificial wetland surrounding the building and a cultivated meadow on the roof. Both elements are intended to increase native animal and plant life while offering educational opportunities for employees and visitors, embodying respect for the site’s natural surroundings. The constructed wetland habitat will envelop a significant portion of the site, fostering microhabitats through varied landscaping that supports and increases the diversity of native species. Featuring varied topography to establish open water spaces, transitional zones, and damp meadows, this landscape design reflects our commitment to embracing rather than erasing the natural habitats that are already there. Urban areas are heating up, and it's not just a comfort issue—it’s a matter of public health and urban resilience. The solutions we develop today will shape tomorrow's cities, making the synergy between innovative architectural practices and academic research vital.   In architecture, innovation means designing for the future—creating spaces that are adaptable, resilient and capable of withstanding the challenges posed by climate change.   For universities, this is an opportunity to lead in research and education, fostering architects and urban planners who think beyond convention. By integrating sustainability and climate resilience into curricula, universities can equip students with the tools to make a real impact.   But we need more than words—we need action. That’s why I’m excited to announce a new research partnership between University of Pennsylvania, Henning Larsen, and Ramboll. Our goal? To create a self-sustaining pavilion that provides relief from urban heat without relying on traditional air conditioning.   Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dFxxxd_n and stay tuned for updates!   Team: University of Pennsylvania, Ramboll, Cambium, Henning Larsen, and a big shout-out to Kritika Kharbanda and Kristian Edwards for being pioneers in this process.   Innovation isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a necessity. #Innovation #Sustainability #Architecture #UrbanPlanning #ClimateChange #HigherEducation #HenningLarsen

Did you catch the stunning closing ceremony of the Olympics yesterday? 🌟 With the next Summer Games heading to Los Angeles, it's worth noting that many cities around the world may struggle to host the Games in the coming decades due to rising temperatures. This includes several parts of the US, particularly the super-humid Gulf Coast states, from Florida to eastern Texas. As countries bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics, it's alarming that many are already facing dangerously high temperatures. This will likely impact the decision on which city will win the bid. But here's the exciting part: as we dive into our research project with UPenn this week, we're exploring cutting-edge cooling technologies. Our goal? To create a self-sustaining pavilion that provides relief from urban heat without relying on traditional air conditioning. Could this innovative solution make a difference at the LA Olympics and beyond?! Stay tuned for updates! 🌍🏅 Team: University of Pennsylvania, Ramboll, Cambium, and Henning Larsen Source: These cities will be too hot for the Olympics by 2050 | CNN Graphics: CarbonPlan, American College of Sports Medicine, Lou Robinson (CNN), Thermal Architecture Lab, Penn. #olympics #urbanheat #radiantcooling #research
