Join Operation Gratitude in celebrating 20 years of saying “Thank you” to the Military and First Responder communities. Offering volunteer opportunities for every American to express their appreciation to all who serve and protect our nation. In March 2003, Operation Gratitude sent its first four care packages to deployed service members in Iraq. Since then, the nonprofit has successfully provided opportunities for millions of Americans to express their appreciation through hands-on volunteerism and has lifted the spirits of more than 3.3 million deployed troops, recruit graduates, veterans, military families, first responders, and healthcare heroes. Operation Gratitude is one of the largest and most impactful nonprofits in the country for hands-on volunteerism in support of the military, veterans, and first responders. It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of our beloved SSG Elizabeth "Liz" "Sarge" Cowie, a founding pillar of Operation Gratitude. Liz’s commitment ran deep. Before her own deployment to Iraq in 2007, she stood by our side at every Assembly Day—rallying volunteers, inspiring donors, and sharing her love of service with everyone she met. Her powerful motto, “No is not an option. Find the way to yes,” became the heartbeat of our organization—a mantra that still guides us today. Liz is survived by her loving husband, Torsten; her children, Tina and Andrew; and her grandchildren, Grayson and Ariel. In retirement, Liz and Torsten spent their time building their dream home in Idaho, riding motorcycles, attending hockey games, and creating lasting memories with family and friends. Liz was a force of nature—a friend, mentor, and inspiration to us all. Her legacy is woven into the very fabric of Operation Gratitude, and she will be profoundly missed. Her spirit will continue to guide and inspire our work. May her memory be a blessing.
