As #Halloween approaches, you might be remembering the headlines around this time last year when the DEA issued a press release warning about “rainbow fentanyl.” #Rainbowfentanyl is the exact same drug as #fentanyl, just dyed a different color. While the DEA posited that rainbow fentanyl was being used to entice children and teens into adopting a dangerous habit, there was no particular evidence for this claim. Stories of drugs being given to kids out trick-or-treating seem to pop up every Halloween, but there is rarely ever any proof to support them. Additionally, these stories ignore the fact that the goal of the drug trade is profit—and children typically don’t have this type of disposable income. What’s more likely is that rainbow fentanyl is being used to give the drug a flashy new look and make it more appealing to those who already use it. “Most importantly, fentanyl is not a problem exclusive to Halloween. New from me: Telehealth companies that focus on opioid addiction treatment say not all controlled substances should be regulated equally by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Companies like Bicycle Health, Ophelia and others are calling on the DEA to keep buprenorphine flexibilities intact. On Wednesday, they got some help from two dozen lawmakers. "You would have hundreds of thousands of patients who depend upon life-saving treatment for opioid use disorder see their medications taken away from them. You would see a rapid surge in deaths." Ophelia's virtual #opioidaddiction care is now in-network with most #Medicaid plans in #NewJersey! In New Jersey, a life is lost every 2 hours and 35 minutes due to an overdose. This is unacceptable. Increasing access to life-saving OUD treatment is critical. Research has found that the risk of dying from an overdose is 36% higher among people living at or below the poverty line, compared with those who have a typical middle class income. Medicaid—along with telehealth—can directly help solve the problem of access to high-quality opioid use disorder care for lower-income individuals. Help us share the news.
