Orcelle Horizon
Maritime Transportation
Developing the world's first wind-powered RoRo vessel
About us
In this EU-funded project, eleven partners will develop and demonstrate a solution for wind as the main propulsion. Orcelle Horizon builds on several large previous projects where simulation tools, wing systems and initial designs of a prototype vessel have been developed. In this project we combine improvements to the simulation framework and wind propulsion systems by supporting the development of two physical demonstrators: an Oceanbird Wing on an existing vessel (retrofit) and a multi-wing newbuilt. The demonstrators are RoRo (PCTC) vessels that will operate in a trans-Atlantic route transporting cars and other cargo. Onboard there will be an extensive set of sensor systems that will allow them to function as research vessels to validate and improve designs, simulation tools and prototype designs of ship & wing systems. A tailored, dynamic weather routing software and service will be developed to optimize sailing performance. The project is a strong opportunity to combine the investments needed to get full-scale demonstration and data capture with advanced models and tools for windpropulsion vessels. The project coordinator is Wallenius Wilhelmsen, a world-leading RoRo logistics operator with some 130 RoRo vessels in global service. Beyond the demonstrator, the project partners use the models and tools to develop advanced conceptual designs and operational plans for multiple vessel types, enabling a large-scale shift towards wind as main propulsion. Project partners: Wallenius Wilhelmsen | SSPA Sweden | KTH Royal Institute of Technology | Ghent University | Alfawall Oceanbird | StormGeo | Volvo Cars | Maritime CleanTech | The National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) | Wallenius Marine | DNV GL This project has received funding from European Union’s Horizon Europe Framework programme under grant no 101096673.

Today, we kick-off our social media campaign "Meet the Projects". Horizon Europe and the Partnership on Zero-Emission Waterborne Transport are key funding tools to enhance Technology Leadership in the WaterborneTP sector. The Orcelle Horizon project is expected to deliver proven wind-propulsion systems, achieving significant energy savings and operational insights from its demonstrator vessels. The collected data will refine simulation tools and optimize future designs, paving the way for scalable adoption across the waterborne sector. By showcasing the feasibility of wind propulsion, the project will enable the transition to sustainable shipping, reducing emissions across diverse vessel types while contributing to global decarbonisation efforts. Volvo Cars is one of eleven partners helping to develop the Orcelle Wind – the world’s first wind-powered oceanic car-carrier vessel, with the ambition to substantially reduce carbon emissions. This week, the project reached a new milestone as some of Sweden's leading experts in ship design and innovation from Wallenius Marine AB and RISE Research Institutes of Sweden visited our wind tunnel in Gothenburg to hold a series of important tests. Using a 5-metre-long model representing the real Orcelle Wind, which will be 220 metres long and carry more than 7,000 cars, the team was able to validate previous data simulations and provide crucial input for design adjustments and further development of the wing control systems. The project is supported by Horizon Europe, which is the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation. The project coordinator, global Norwegian shipping company Wallenius Wilhelmsen, aims for the Orcelle Wind to start sailing the seas in 2028. Normally, our wind tunnel is used to test our cars at every development stage, from early clay models to final production-ready cars. But we’re happy to occasionally use it for other purposes as well!

𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓪𝓷𝓼𝔀𝓮𝓻 𝓲𝓼 𝓫𝓵𝓸𝔀𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓲𝓷 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝔀𝓲𝓷𝓭! Niclas Dahl, Managing Director of Oceanbird, took the stage at #ChasingZero2024 hosted by Maritime CleanTech today to share the vision of the future of wind-powered shipping 🌎✨ To a packed audience of leaders and pioneers in the green maritime transition, Dahl emphasized that there is no silver bullet solution to achieve sustainable shipping. But whether you use conventional or future fuels, wind-assisted propulsion can help slash emissions and save fuel costs by harnessing the free and renewable power of wind. This is the essence of the Orcelle Horizon project—bringing wind propulsion to the forefront of global shipping innovation. Together, we are proving that the shipping industry can rise to the climate challenge. 🌱💡 CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency | Wallenius Wilhelmsen | Maritime CleanTech | DNV | National Technical University of Athens | KTH Royal Institute of Technology | Oceanbird | Wallenius Marine AB | Universiteit Gent | Maritime at RISE | StormGeo | Volvo Cars | Tonje Hovland #WindPropulsion #OrcelleHorizon #ChasingZero #SustainableShipping #MaritimeInnovation

🔊 Check out this Maritime Impact Podcast by DNV, and hear from our team member Johanna Tranell on the drivers for Wind-Assisted Propulsion!
According to our #maritimeforecast the International Windship Association estimates that around 90 large vessels could have wind-assisted propulsion systems (#WAPS) at the end of 2024, compared with 31 systems at the beginning of the year. What are the main drivers for owners and operators to invest in that promising fuel-reduction technology? In our podcast episode 'Where does wind power fit into shipping's green technology solution space?' host Eirik Nyhus, Director Environment at DNV talks to Johanna Tranell, WAPS specialists at DNV, to find out more about regulatory and commercial drivers for WAPS. Johanna also shares important design and operational considerations that help to achieve fuel savings. Listen to the full episode to get all insights on https://dnv.social/5Ph.
