Radical changes are needed to comply with the International Maritime Organization's target to reduce GHG emissions from shipping by 100% by 2050. Both vessel design and power generation are impacted. However, the main challenge is fuel – the future fuels in shipping and the related global investments in their production and infrastructure. While the shipping industry is exploring ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen as alternative marine fuels, no clear leader has emerged. Methanol is currently leading due to its lower toxicity and ease of storage compared to ammonia, despite being more expensive. The IMO has set guidelines for its use. Ammonia may surge once the infrastructure is in place and safety concerns are addressed. Hydrogen's role remains limited due to storage challenges. #WärtsilaPartner Wärtsilä is proud to participate in the Apollo Ammonia Project, an EU-funded initiative aimed at revolutionising the maritime industry through the demonstration of a dual-fuel ammonia engine in a platform supply vessel. This innovative approach is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 70% or more, significantly advancing the adoption of ammonia as a sustainable fuel in shipping. Key objectives of the project include: - Successful large-scale demonstration of a dual-fuel internal combustion engine (ammonia-based) in an existing vessel. - Achieving the first classification under DNV "Gas fuelled, Ammonia". - Attaining a 70% reduction in CO₂ emissions and NOₓ emissions below 2.4 g/kWh from vessel operations. The project's results will be implemented on the Eidesvik vessel Viking Energy, with live operational demonstrations for Equinor in the North Sea. We are committed to advancing sustainable solutions in the maritime industry and look forward to the positive impact this project will have on reducing emissions and promoting cleaner fuels. In just 25 years - the lifetime of a single vessel - shipping must eliminate its contribution to climate change. To aid in the industry’s energy transition, Wärtsilä is dedicated to the testing and development of technologies and solutions aimed for low and zero carbon marine fuels.  That's why we are proud to be supporting Provaris Energy with this project. The positive outcomes of this analysis highlights the potential of integrating advanced propulsion technologies to achieve substantial emission reductions and meet stringent regulatory standards. In the words of Stefan Nysjö, Vice President of Power Supply, Wärtsilä Marine: “We are fully aligned with Provaris’ vision to accelerate the maritime industry towards net-zero emissions shipping, with these positive results underscoring our joint commitment to supporting the industry’s sustainable future.” Find out more below 👇

We're pleased to report the preliminary results for meeting Europe’s Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II) emissions standards for bulk hydrogen shipping using our proprietary H2Neo carrier on a round-trip between Norway and Germany. Implemented in December 2018, RED II sets stringent emissions standards aimed at fostering the use of renewable energy sources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the European Union. RED II mandates that by 2030, at least 32% of the EU's energy consumption must come from renewable sources. We thank Wärtsilä Marine for supporting the analysis with a proposal for current and future propulsion plant configurations, together with Provaris’ own analysis on fuel consumption and carbon emissions - over a range of sailing speeds and fuel types. 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱-𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝟮𝗡𝗲𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿, 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝟳.𝟲 𝗴 𝗖𝗢𝟮𝗲/ 𝗠𝗝 𝗛𝟮 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟮𝟴.𝟮 𝗴 𝗖𝗢𝟮𝗲/ 𝗠𝗝 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝗨 𝗥𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗜 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲. The estimated emissions were based on current propulsion technologies selected for the H2Neo carrier, which includes a hybrid electric propulsion plant with modern 4-stroke LNG Dual Fuel generating sets. Future scenario involving the integration of a 3,000 kW hydrogen fuel cell into the propulsion plant, which would further reduce emissions by 20 to 30%. Due to the uncertainty around which alternative fuel is likely to become widespread, both in its availability and cost effectiveness, owners and operators must play a balancing act between long-term viability and immediate decarbonisation in the here and now. In the words of our very own Toni Stojcevski, General Manager of Project Sales & Development at Wärtsilä Marine: “In order to reach the 2050 IMO target we need the industry to cross-collaborate. At Wärtsilä, we are taking the responsibility to deliver flexible and future-safe solutions, which can be easily adapted to future needs.” This week, for Veriten’s latest C.O.B Tuesday podcast episode, Toni sat down with David Millar, Principal of Markets, Legislative, and Regulatory Policy at Wärtsilä Energy, Maynard Holt, Mike Bradley and Jeff Tillery to talk about the energy transition taking place in both the Marine and Energy sectors. On the marine side, Toni discussed the critical role of shipping in the global economy, the evolution of fuel use in shipping, and Wärtsilä’s broader efforts to develop solutions that meet emissions targets. #InCaseYouMissedIt check out the episode here 👉  https://lnkd.in/ewkJC9w4 #shipping #decarbonisation #alternativefuels #marine
