During the final week of See Us, Support Us month, SUSU focuses on systems change and opens the SUSU newsletter with guidance from Jamila Small, SUSU 2024 Youth Fellow, on the systemic changes needed to ensure dignity and thriving for all. "Through creativity, activism, and community engagement, the SUSU Youth team is transforming pain into purpose, proving that perseverance and hope can flourish even in difficult situations. We prefer to be supported in the first place and our families to remain intact so we don’t have to develop resilience. Our voices are not just echoes of hardship; they are declarations of strength, inspiring others to join the movement for change." Read more: https://lnkd.in/eguYJYpj

In 2019, we adopted the following core values, which were composed through a collaborative process involving staff at all levels of the organization: 1. We honor everyone’s capacity to change. 2. We celebrate our shared humanity. 3. We are united in our pursuit of justice and equity. 4. We keep our word. 5. We are unstoppable.

This week we during #SeeUsSupportUS we focus on meeting children's unique needs, understanding their varied experiences, and nurturing their healing, aspirations and relationships. The stigma of parental incarceration is isolating and children may not seek support because they fear being judged. Understand that accepting support may be difficult and is compounded by the stigma attached to asking for help, especially for one’s mental health. Connecting young people and their families with tailored, culturally responsive resources that support their emotional and physical wellbeing, educational and vocational aspirations, and financial stability ensures that they feel understood and supported. This week during #SeeUsSupportUs month, we focus on dismantling stereotypes and creating environments where children can cultivate a positive sense of self. Negative beliefs, sometimes implicit, about people who are arrested and incarcerated often extend to their families. Children who are separated from their parents, with the many emotions and instability that can follow, are labeled and misunderstood instead of SEEN and SUPPORTED. A huge thank-you to Water for Elephants: The Broadway Musical for donating tickets to our Marcus Garvey and Fulton residents and staff. They were so grateful for the opportunity to attend the show! Several shared that this was the first time in their lives they had ever attended a performance. Experiences like this bring so much joy. 🌟
