Credible messengers play a critical role in the city’s response to community violence. This new practical training curriculum is designed to enhance the recruitment and training of these staff, build trauma-informed skills, and empower community-based organizations. Developed alongside a widely recognized steering committee, this Trauma Training Curriculum is meant to serve as a manual or guide for community-based organizations to train their staff on trauma, trauma-informed care, and topics often related to trauma in the context of credible messenger work. https://lnkd.in/ew8ru--z

Working to reduce unnecessary pretrial detention and assist the people of New York City
About us
The NYC Criminal Justice Agency NYC (CJA) exists to create a fairer, more equitable and efficient criminal justice system in New York City. As the city’s only pretrial agency, CJA’s wide-reaching efforts are driven by the belief that courts should not detain people unnecessarily and the system should do all it can to return defendants to their families and communities. CJA conducts system-wide interviews and unparalleled data collection that it shares with policymakers, court officials, legal experts, advocates and the media. Not only a research leader, CJA conducts the city’s only hot-line and provides services to defendants and their families.

"It makes a difference when we know we can help people, especially young adults, to help them break the cycle." The #AtlasProject is a groundbreaking initiative to transform lives through resources and therapy. Created by the NYC Office of Neighborhood Safety and United Way of New York City in 2020, the #AtlasProject provides targeted assistance to young people in the criminal legal system. The results have been groundbreaking. While partners orgs provide many services, CJA serves as a primary source of sign-ups. Staff talk about what this program means to participants, and to them. “You can always change, and I feel like that's the opportunity that Atlas offers them.” https://lnkd.in/eBi_waS2

30 years of exclusive NYC crime data, all in one place. The Data Hub from Vital City is the perfect archival companion to CJA's pretrial dashboards, and gives an unparalleled look at NYC's historic decline in crime. CJA's pretrial data dashboards offer a more contemporary view of pretrial data, with in depth looks into arrests, release and more. Our latest dashboard focusing on court outcomes shows fascinating trends in disposition rates, alternate court programs, and sentencing rates. Vital City is one of several providers of robust pretrial data that can inform better policy and conversations. Vera Institute of Justice, New York State Unified Court System, and others have excellent tools for analyzing and visualizing this data https://lnkd.in/dQH2SFeV https://lnkd.in/dKGJpQfX

CJA has successfully worked to increase court appearance in NYC for years. With support from Urban Institute and Microsoft, we're excited to investigate new dimensions of this impactful issue. People miss court dates for many reasons, distance and lack of transport are cited as common roadblocks. Missing court can lead to severe consequences which often fall disproportionately on people of color. Our team will investigate this inequity and how it can be addressed. CJA provides authoritative pretrial data and expert analysis in NYC. For this project we'll use Microsoft's cutting edge tech in geospatial analysis, making intuitive maps that drive better policy. Congratulations to our fellow grantees, who will also be using technology and data to reform the criminal legal system and build more equitable communities. https://lnkd.in/etpcvzX6
