As we approach the third quarter of 2024, the European carbon markets show bearish signs, primarily due to strong renewables performance and weaker power demand. Interestingly, the spread between EUAs and UKAs has narrowed, with EUAs trading at a premium of around Eur10/mt over UKAs in late-June. THE TIME IS NOW. The global shift towards decarbonization is creating significant volatility and demand for flexible, innovative trading strategies. While funding for renewable energy sources has surged, it is still falling short of necessary levels creating a discrepancy that may result in supply imbalances for critical materials by 2030.

Where this is difficult to suss out is the profitability that Vistra Corp. foresees and their view of the long-term viability of these projects. I hope that they are not the only ones who view gas-fired units as profitable for the years to come. That is especially the case given the projected load growth that ERCOT sees over the next few years.
