Just a couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege of attending the #UNFCCC #SB60 meeting in Germany. Although not as popular as the Conference of the Parties, the Subsidiary Bodies meetings are where most of the technical discussion happens before sending a draft decision for its adoption (usually after a heavy political discussion) to the COP.
This year, I participated as a delegate of OUT for Sustainability and focused on advocating for the need to include an #intersectional approach during the revision of the Lima Work Programme on #Gender and #ClimateChange and its Gender Action Plan, aiming towards an enhanced version of these important documents at #COP29 that is inclusive and equitable. Although often overlooked, gender discussions at the UNFCCC have been pivotal towards a stronger inclusion of women and gender-diverse people in #ClimateAction at all levels.
I was beyond moved to see the support of the Women and Gender Constituency (WGC) and YOUNGO, as well as from a copious number of Member States who not only were convinced of the importance of bringing diverse voices to the discussion but also showed their commitments and actions.
As the decision stands today, although still fully open for discussion, it provides a comprehensive and progressive vision that includes no less than eleven references to matters regarding #HumanRights, gender-disaggregated data (as opposed to sex-disaggregated), #diversity, and #intersectionalities. More importantly, the majority of these are included in the operational part of the draft, meaning it requires Parties to the Convention to take action.
While never perfect, this is a great start and sets a very positive precedent in #UN-related discussions of #climate. We cannot go back in any of these mentions, but rather maintain and expand, nor let anyone dismiss the progress made on this important discussion.
Check out the draft decision below.
Kudos to the UNFCCC gender team, the co-facilitators, and all member states and engaged organizations who worked diligently around the clock to carry out these important negotiations.
