We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting communities and wildlife of the Pacific Rim.

About us

Pacific Environment empowers communities to protect their well-being and the natural world around them. We get money and expertise to the ground in challenging venues on the Pacific Rim, including China, Russia, and the Alaskan Arctic. By strengthening communities and protecting the environment in such places, we also promote transparency, public participation, and legal enforcement, which form the basis on which people can achieve lasting protection of their health and the environment. Pacific Environment offers one of the very few granting and training programs serving grassroots leaders around the Pacific Rim. At the heart of our long-term commitment to community-led environmental activism is a comprehensive support program. The community leaders and groups we partner with consistently tell us that the value we provide stems from three things: 1) giving them financial and mentoring support; 2) bringing them together in coordinated networks; and 3) supplying much needed expertise for their campaigns (e.g., technical, scientific, legal). Over three decades we have nurtured more than 150 grassroots organizations around the Pacific Rim and provided millions of dollars. In turn, the networks we foster create concentric ripples outward to many more people and organizations that ally together to undertake public education, litigation, media outreach, large-scale advocacy campaigns, and sophisticated policy work. To complement these community efforts, Pacific Environment has developed substantial expertise in global policy venues typically beyond the reach of local leaders. For example, we have obtained one of the few seats available to NGOs at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a U.N. agency that writes the rules for the high seas. We use this seat to advocate for rules that protect marine mammals and indigenous food security, curb greenhouse gas emissions, and protect Arctic waters from the dangers of catastrophic oil spills.

Jim Gamble, Senior Director of Pacific Environment’s Arctic Program, is featured in a Bunkerspot piece discussing proposed International Maritime Organization (IMO) revenue generation mechanisms OUT NOW! 🎉 Right now a key debate at the IMO’s #MEPC82 summit – where Pacific Environment is hosting youth climate activists from Nigeria, Kenya, Dominica, Tuvalu and Brazil – is revenue generation mechanisms: The decision between a flat carbon levy and a more complex carbon trading system. Jim Gamble told Bunkerspot that the committee will need to make sure that any new measures do not alienate those less well-off. A carbon trading system could cause inequality in the shipping sector’s transition to low-carbon operations. Here’s what he had to say: “The problem with [the carbon trading system], from our perspective, is that it has a possibility of creating a group who can move more quickly. They're going to be selling these residual units or buying them from countries that can't. So, you set up this situation where there are haves and have nots.” Jim also discusses other pressing issues on the agenda, including reducing black carbon emissions in the Arctic, regulating exhaust gas cleaning systems and addressing underwater noise from vessels. 🚢 Read the full piece here: https://bit.ly/imorevenue Learn more about the activists here:  Abigael Kima 🇰🇪 Marcelo Rocha 🇧🇷 Nicole Morson 🇩🇲 Olumide Idowu (Mr. Climate) 🇳🇬 Shania Scotland 🇩🇲 Teresa Lifuka-Drecala 🇹🇻 #ClimateAction #UN

The Pacific Environment team is on the ground in London for the International Maritime Organization’s #MEPC82 summit happening this week. 🚢 Antonio Santos, Climate Federal Policy Director, Fern Uennatornwaranggoon, Ports Climate Campaign Director (pictured above), and Jim Gamble, Arctic Senior Director, are advocating for a just zero-emission transition for the maritime shipping industry.   ⏰ Right now a carbon levy on #shipping emissions is being negotiated at the IMO, which would be a powerful tool to close the price gap between fuels and boost clean energy for one of the most polluting global industries in the world. ⚡ We are also working alongside youth advocates from around the world to get an ambitious and equitable levy adopted next year. As a meeting of the International Maritime Organization’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (IMO, MEPC 82) opens today, the Clean Arctic Alliance urges IMO member states to regulate emissions of black carbon from shipping in and near the Arctic, and to ban the use of scrubbers in the region. Context: 2023 was the fourth warmest Arctic year on record. Meanwhile a recent report shows that Earth may have breached seven of nine planetary boundaries – the latest being ocean acidification, which is having its largest impact in the Arctic and Southern Oceans, while the National Snow and Ice Data Center reports that on September 11, Arctic Sea ice reached the seventh lowest on the satellite record. NSIDC notes that the 18 lowest minimums have all occurred in the last 18 years. According to a paper in Geophysical Research Letters, there has been a significant 24% reduction in Arctic sea ice reflective capacity – due in part to black carbon from gas flaring and other sources – including shipping. ”During MEPC 82 the IMO must finally commit to developing new regulations which would identify fuels suitable for use by international shipping in the polar regions, which would deliver an immediate fuel-based reduction in black carbon emissions which impact the Arctic”, said Dr Sian Prior, Lead Advisor to the Clean Arctic Alliance. “With a changing Arctic having detrimental impacts on weather systems around the world, and after more than a decade of deliberation, it is time governments finally started to regulate emissions of short-lived climate forcers such as black carbon from international shipping.” “Even though this committee has met 21 times in the last decade and a half since agreeing to address emissions of black carbon, the shipping sector continues to emit climate forcing pollutants, without any regulation”, added Prior. “Even worse, emissions of black carbon from ships sailing in and near to the Arctic, which have a disproportionate impact when the particles settle onto snow and ice, have increased by 37% in 10 years. The downward trend in Arctic sea ice since the early 1980s shows that we have lost nearly 10% of the sea extent every decade, which during the month of August, equates to an area roughly six times the size of France.” “Frustratingly, we have also known for a long time how to start reducing emissions of black carbon – we don’t need new fuels or new technology to kick-start black carbon emissions reductions – we simply need ships to all move to cleaner distillate fuels while operating in and near to the Arctic (north of 60oN latitude) and diesel particulate filters to be installed. This would see reductions of over 90% in black carbon emissions”, said Prior. https://lnkd.in/d8issm_a #shipping #mepc82 #blackcarbon

Did you know that international ocean #shipping is one of the world’s largest contributors to climate change? 🚢 What you need to know: 💨 Maritime shipping is responsible for 3% of global annual GHG emissions.  📦 Almost 100,000 boats move 11 billion tons of goods across the world’s oceans each year.  🌎 If ocean shipping were a country, it would be the world's sixth-largest climate polluter. The Pacific Environment team and a cohort of youth climate activists are in London for the International Maritime Organization’s #MEPC82 summit to negotiate in favor of an ambitious and equitable carbon levy. This levy would be a powerful tool to close the price gap between fuels and boost clean energy for one of the most polluting global industries in the world, and provide the resources needed to deliver a just and equitable transition. ⚡ You can learn more about each of the activists and what we are advocating for at #MEPC82 here: https://bit.ly/4eExTQw #UN #ClimateAction

I'm proud to be joining Pacific Environment in pushing for setting a strong and equitable carbon levy on global shipping at the @UN's International Maritime Organization's climate summit in London from 30th Sept - 4th Oct. As part of Pacific Environment’s delegation, I will use my voice to bring the experiences of local communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis, caused in no small part by tax-free fossil-fuelled shipping, to the International Maritime Organization's negotiation room. I will remind governments that their decision is, first and foremost about human lives. A levy on shipping would be the first-ever instance of a global polluter paying for its pollution and is a critical part of cleaning up this industry in a way that does not burden the already most vulnerable. I look forward to meeting Nigeria🇳🇬 delegates from @nimasaofficial NIGERIANPORTS AUTHORITY Federal Ministry of Environment, Nigeria Sen Alkali and International Maritime Organization's SG Arsenio Dominguez #ClimateAction #UN #Shipping

Happy World Maritime Day! 🚢 Did you know that 90% of global trade takes place via ocean transport? 👀 Ocean-going ships run on some of the dirtiest fuels on the planet making it a huge climate polluter. Frontline port communities bear the brunt of pollution and emissions for ships and ports – threatening their health and lives. Globally, these emissions contribute to an estimated 265,000 premature deaths and 6 million cases of childhood asthma each year. 💀 One year ago today, Pacific Environment, Ocean Conservancy, and our allies sent a letter to the White House urging the administration to issue an Executive Order to accelerate action on decarbonizing the maritime sector. Since then, 68 organizations and more than 24,000 concerned citizens have signed on in support. On the one-year anniversary of our letter, we continue to urge President Biden to take meaningful action with an Executive Order to eliminate shipping emissions, reduce underwater noise pollution, help save lives, advance environmental justice and create good-paying jobs. ✍️ On World Maritime Day, sign the petition to call on the Biden administration to sign an executive order to END ship and port pollution: https://lnkd.in/g5sU9GNc

ICYMI: California and environmental groups separately sued ExxonMobil on Monday, accusing the oil giant of misleading the public about the effectiveness of plastics recycling. ❌ ♻️ ❌ ExxonMobil — a major producer of the synthetic substances used to make plastics — has made billions off of plastic bottles, bags and wrappers polluting waterways. (Remember: Plastic is made from FOSSIL FUEL!) 🏭 As ExxonMobil bumped up production, they also promoted the widely used “chasing arrows” symbol on plastic products, which led buyers to believe that their bottles and other products would be recycled if disposed of properly. But only about 5% of plastic waste in the U.S. is recycled, according to research from Beyond Plastics. Plastic recycling faces economic and technical limitations and can have negative environmental impacts. In a historic move, California made a first-ever attempt by a U.S. government official to hold a fossil fuel company accountable for allegedly lying to the public about the recyclability of plastics. 🔥 Several environmental non-profits including The Surfrider Foundation, Sierra Club, Heal the Bay, and San Francisco Baykeeper have also filed a lawsuit to hold ExxonMobil accountable claiming that Exxon violated California's nuisance and unfair competition laws by hiding the dangers of single-use plastics. It also alleges that Exxon misled the public into thinking plastic could be easily and safely disposed of through recycling, which has only worsened the plastic pollution crisis.🥤 Read the full piece from the The New York Times here: https://nyti.ms/3B9Lb9h #PlasticPollutes #BreakFreeFromPlastic #ClimateAction #RefuseSingleUsePlastic
