In the second installment of her AI for Legal Aid series for Thomson Reuters Institute, our CEO Kristen Sonday covers how legal services organizations are leveraging AI to help individuals in need. In one example, Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands used a combination of document automation and AI tools to automatically generate expungement petitions. At a one-day legal clinic, LAS expunged 324 charges for 98 people — work that would have taken significantly longer without automation. In another, Legal Aid of North Carolina is leveraging AI to provide 24/7 access to legal information through a virtual assistant known as the AI Legal Information Assistant (LIA). Available on the organization’s website, LIA answers questions from the public about housing, family law, and consumer rights in plain language, making legal information accessible to those who may not have immediate access to an attorney. Read on to learn how it works! cc: Gavel Zachary Oswald Legal Aid of North Carolina Scheree Gilchrist LawDroid - Generative AI Legal Technology Thomas G. Martin Legal Services Corporation

Fresh off Election Judge training and with Election Day just 3 weeks away, I wanted to share 5 fun facts I learned (disclaimer: this is Chicago-specific): 👔 Don't wear candidate or party merch when going to vote! It is considered electioneering and judges must ask you to remove it. 📍 Double-check your polling place (precinct); you'll be redirected if you go to the wrong location. 🕖 In Chicago, as long as you're in line to vote by 7 PM, you'll be allowed in. Don't be late! 👩⚖️ At every polling station, there are usually five Judges - at least 2 R and at least 2 D - and one Coordinator. It truly is a bipartisan effort. 🌃 There are 1,291 precincts in Chicago alone! Volunteers come from all different backgrounds and parts of the city- it was one of the most diverse rooms I've been in in a while. See you on the 5th (or better yet, request a mail-in ballot online by 10/31 to save time)!

Curious about how AI is empowering legal services providers to streamline their services and help even more people in need? My latest for Thomson Reuters is a 2-part series on innovative AI projects that are supercharging LSOs. Check out the first part, featuring The Innocence Center and Casetext, Part of Thomson Reuters, alongside NYC's Housing Court Answers and legaltech company Josef. The way these public-private partnerships are leveraging commercial-grade tech to build cutting edge solutions will be a blueprint as we scale access to justice. cc Michael Semanchik Laura Safdie Sam Flynn Sateesh Nori Paladin Legal Services Corporation
