“While these individuals face the same issues as many others who are aging – social isolation, loneliness, housing affordability, and ageism – research shows they have additional concerns that can take a toll on health and wellness.” – Marilynn Larkin, M.A., in an article in the Journal of Active Aging. By 2030, it’s estimated that there will be 7 million U.S. adults 65 and older who identify as LGBTQ, and the numbers this number will continue to grow exponentially – yet there is almost no information on aging in the community. What we do know is that older adults who are LGBTQ+ face many barriers when it comes to accessing healthcare, such as a history of discrimination, low rates of health insurance coverage, and disproportionate rates of HIV/AIDs, mental health issues, and chronic physical conditions. The LGBTQ+ community matters. Organizations like SAGE’s National Resource Center on LGBT Aging was created to address the unique needs of this vibrant and resilient community.
